Cultural diversity, streets with traditional buildings in the historical part, deep blue Lake Constance - all this is the picturesque city of Konstanz. It is located on the border of Germany and Switzerland.

The Rhine River divides the city into two parts: on the left south coast costs Old city- the historical core of the city, and on the right bank - modern city. Almost all of Konstanz's attractions are located within the city limits and are easy to visit. Konstanz is also one of the largest tourist centers on Lake Constance.

Konstanz – attractions and places to go.

In the port of Lake Constance you can see a sculpture of a woman, quite impressive in size. Its author is Peter Lenk, he gave it the name “Empire”. This is a nine-meter and 18-ton sculpture symbolizing the Empire, every four minutes it rotates around its axis. On the woman’s outstretched arms are two more sculptures: an emperor in a crown - secular power, and the Pope - ecclesiastical power. Both men are naked, making the sculpture an infamous structure.

You can imagine yourself in a bygone era while walking along the streets of the old city. You can still find houses from the late Middle Ages on them. Once upon a time, artisans, fishermen and small traders lived here. Each house has its own name, which can be read on the façade sign. And in this most romantic area of Constanta there are many shops, restaurants and wine bars.

At the highest point of the city is the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. This building is a historical monument of Constanta, because it was from its construction that fishermen and artisans began to settle around, which led to population growth and the expansion of the city.

The temple has stood on this site for about a thousand years, and throughout its long history it has been reconstructed more than once. Now you can consider different stylistic features in it, such as Gothic, Renaissance. The neo-Gothic tower, which soars high into the sky, amazes with its beauty. To view every architectural element, you need to walk around the church. In the western portal there are two doors, each of them has ten square fields, making 20 in total, and on them scenes of the life of Jesus are depicted using carving techniques.

Among the surviving medieval towers in the city of Konstanz, the Rheintorturm has an important historical meaning. It was built in 1200, and Frederick II passed through its gates during his visits to the city. The tower and bridge were heavily damaged during the Napoleonic Wars.

The complete reconstruction of the tower began in 1999. Now the tower is used as an observation deck. You just need to climb the steps and you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Rhine River and the surrounding city.

The Constanta Theater has been welcoming its audience for more than 400 years. The beginning of its construction dates back to 1607. Wooden columns on the first floor have been preserved from that time. The building received its current appearance after a large-scale reconstruction in the 1930s.

All cultural connoisseurs will be interested in visiting the theater both from the outside and by attending performances within its walls. The repertoire is varied, the theater offers different productions. Travelers from Russia will appreciate classic productions such as Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, directed by Polish-born Andrei Voron.

Just like the art and culture of the city of Konstanz and Lake Constance, the Rosgarten Museum has a long history. The moment of its foundation dates back to 1870, when a fairly large collection on the history of the city and region was collected.

The permanent exhibition is complemented by annual exhibitions on the art and cultural history of the region. It is better to set aside a whole day for visiting the museum; the exhibits collected there are too interesting. There is a historical hall - a “museum within a museum”, where objects of geology, paleontology, and archeology are collected, telling about the emergence of human life in the Bronze Age.

The hall of the Middle Ages is interesting, when bishops influenced the political fate of the region. In the Urban Development Hall you can study the history of the city's development and view a model of the city of Konstanz.

There is also a hall of modern times, a hall of the Guild, a chronicler's chronicle with amazing drawings, and a hall of reformation. Sculptures and paintings by local craftsmen are interesting. The room of Napoleon Bonaparte is worthy of admiration, among the things in which are his shoes, a snuff box, and a glass with a monogram from the ex-queen.

Residents of Konstanz expressed their memory of the cruelest times of Nazism in the Hall of Nazi Memory; the exhibition focuses on the victims, as well as the brave people who fought against this regime. All this can be seen in the museum, an excursion to which will be remembered for many years.

The Wessenberg City Art Gallery arose thanks to the German famous public figure, named Ignaz Heinrich Karl von Wessenberg.

During his life, he collected an extensive collection of paintings, which he sold to the Duke of Baden, on one condition - it would remain in the city forever. The collection was then expanded by city acquisitions and private donations.

The gallery's main focus is the art of southwestern Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries. It also hosts temporary exhibitions of German and foreign artists.

The main collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Baden-Württenberg was located in Konstanz in 1992. The permanent exhibition includes several sections. The ground floor presents the history of archeology and human evolution. Next comes the shipping hall.

In the Middle Ages hall you can examine and compare the way of life of the village and the city; there are models of houses on display. Special section – ships. From the oldest, found in 1340, to modern ones. The museum’s unique exhibit is considered antique Trossingen lyre, six string musical instrument, dating back to 580. The museum will greatly appeal to connoisseurs of ancient history.

In Constanta, tourists can plunge into fascinating undersea world. The Aquarium is located right in the port of Constanta, a short walk from the city center, lake and train station.

Each SEA LIFE aquarium is unique, just like the marine animals. Here you can watch the life of majestic sharks, curious sea turtles, stingrays, octopuses, Cuban crocodiles and many other marine inhabitants. There's about 3500 animals, in 35 aquariums. Right on the shore of the lake in Constanta, professional courses are held that teach swimming and water driving techniques. The young team of the sailing school brings pleasure from water sports.

Konstanz, located where the Rhine flows into Lake Constance, is considered the largest locality this region. Swiss Kreuzlingen has become so closely integrated with Konstanz that in some places the state border runs right along populated streets and two neighboring houses may well be located in different countries.

It is known that in the 2nd century BC. the area was inhabited by Celts. During the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus, the territory came under the rule of Great Empire. The ruins of a Roman defensive fortification with a glass pyramid installed above it, excavated by archaeologists, can today be seen on Münsterplatz Square. According to historians, the city was named after Emperor Constantine. During the time of the great migration of peoples, Bishop Maxim proclaimed himself the mayor. And in 1312, a city union was formed, which also included Zurich, Schaffhausen and St. Gallen. Various wars - from the Thirty Years' War to World War II - were favorable to the city, as a result of which it was practically not subject to destruction, preserving its historical appearance to this day.

Many of the streets of Constanta look almost the same as when they were built in the 12th, 15th or 19th centuries. One of the most important attractions is the Constance Cathedral, which hosted the conclave chosen by Pope Martin V in 1417. Today the building is used for various events, and there is a restaurant in one of its halls.

The walls of the house "Haus zur Kunke", located on Münsterplatz, are decorated with frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries telling about historical events that era.

Located in the Katzgasse alley, the house "Haus zur Katz" was built in 1424 in the likeness of the Florentine Palazzo Vecchio and is considered the oldest Renaissance building in the Alpine region.

The Jan Hus Stone is installed in the central square of the city. It was at this place that the Czech reformer, together with his associate Jerome of Prague, was sentenced to death and executed in the flames of a fire.

A 9-meter statue of the courtesan Imperia rises above the port of Constanta. A lady, dressed in frivolous clothes, balances two naked men sitting on her arms. One of them wears the papal tiara, the second the Kaiser's crown. There was a lot of controversy associated with the construction of the statue, but since it was installed on private property, the city could not prevent its appearance in any way.

Konstanz has a unique street lighting system. After 11 p.m., the lights turn off, but anyone can turn them on by pressing a button on the pole. After 15 minutes the lights go out automatically.

By visiting Konstanz, you can be among the lucky ones who cross the state border in their sleep - after all, there are houses here where people sleep with their heads in Germany and their feet in Switzerland (or vice versa, this is optional). This city is also so beautiful that many locals spend their holidays at home and don’t want to go anywhere else.
There is hardly another city in Germany that has such a picturesque and at the same time such an unusual location. It is located on the shores of 3 parts of Lake Constance at the same time: the bays of Obersee, Überlinger See and the Lake Rhine (Seerein) channel on the border with Switzerland and forms a single agglomeration with the neighboring Swiss city of Kreuzlingen. The border between the two states literally runs across the roofs of houses in some places. Many city residents travel daily to work or visit another state. Thanks to Switzerland joining the Schengen zone several years ago, you will now have the opportunity to visit 2 countries at once.
From the embankments and beaches of Constanta opens great view in the Alps and the natural areas of Säntis and Hegau, as well as on the coast of Switzerland. The climate in the region is quite mild, without sharp temperature fluctuations - Lake Constance acts as a powerful temperature regulator.
Konstanz is also a university city with numerous offers in the field of leisure and entertainment. In terms of population - 82 thousand people, the city is the largest on Lake Constance. It also has, perhaps, the richest and most colorful history.

Attractions Constanta reflects the entire long history, which began in the 2nd century BC. history. They are represented by late antique fortifications of the ancient Romans, and church buildings of the early Middle Ages, and the houses of the nobility and artisans of the medieval burghers, and large-scale buildings of the era of the Green Age. During World War 2, the city was not damaged by bombing, largely thanks to the neighboring neutral Switzerland and the city of Kreuzlingen. Also, there were no important military-industrial and strategic transport facilities here,

Thanks to this, the historic Old Town appears to many visitors in its original state, and there is a lot to see. At one time, Konstanz was the episcopal residence - thanks to this, there is a rich heritage of church architecture, episcopal Cathedral, the Constance Monastery and a number of churches. Much reminds us of what took place here in 1414-1418. church cathedral and elections of the Pope, incl. One of the symbols of the city is the statue “Empire”, installed in 1993 on the shore of the lake in memory of the glorious times of the Council of Constance described by Balzac.

Culture and entertainment in Constanta: Located in the building of the Jesuit gymnasium, built in 1610 city theater It is considered the oldest theater in Germany with its own building. The city's theater company's performances attract visitors from across the Bodensee region and participate in festivals both in Germany and abroad thanks to the high professional level of the actors and the program's focus on audiences of all ages. The only one of its kind is located in Constanta Philharmonic of South-West Germany, giving about 100 concerts a year and turning Bodensee into a major cultural region. The center has become a new popular meeting place Kulturzentrum am Munster, opened in May 1998. Here is the city library, an association of artists, and the Wessenberg-Galerie, presenting art objects from high-quality collections - a total of about 6,000 exhibits, as well as an evening institute.

There are many smaller private cultural institutions in the city: for example K9 Cultural Center, where rock, pop and jazz concerts take place, as well as theatrical performances, a cultural center Kulturladen, focused on non-commercial music.

New discoveries and curiosities are offered by the exhibitions of local museums: the Rosgarten Museum in the city center, one of the oldest in Baden-Württemberg, presenting exhibits from the history of art and culture of the city and the Bodensee region, the museum of the Czech figure of the Reformation era Jan Hus, whose name also appears in historical chronicles city, the archaeological museum of Baden-Württemberg (Archaologisches Landesmuseum), presenting on an area of 3000 m2 the results of archaeological excavations in different corners states of Baden - Württemberg. Sights, excursions and entertainment in Constanta

The cultural heritage of the city's past is partially hidden under modern buildings. But there is still something to see. A treasure trove for tourists is the “sculptural warehouse” from 1962, which recalls a previously thriving and interesting civilization and supplies valuable exhibits to the Museum of History and Areology of the city, founded back in 1889. Other interesting sights of Constanta include:

Museum of the Sea;
Museum of Ethnography;

In addition, Constanta abounds with a great scattering of temples, cathedrals and churches of various concessions and religions. Basic religious buildings that are definitely worth seeing with my own eyes:

Karol Mosque;
Catholic Church;
Orthodox Cathedral of Peter and Paul.
In the latter you can admire unique frescoes that have been preserved surprisingly intact. Besides, this cathedral does not look like other Orthodox buildings - there is a noticeable shade of Ottoman architecture on it. The creation of the cathedral dates back to 1898.

The mosque, founded in 1910, is actually the twin of the Anatolian mosque and a center for the Muslim part of the population of Constanta. From the site of this building you can take in virtually the entire city, including the port area. The minaret reaches a height of 30 meters.

In addition to the listed attractions, in Constanta you can get a lot positive emotions in the planetarium, aquarium, dolphinarium, drama and musical theaters, the legendary local casino, built according to drawings and diagrams provided by the Kingdom of Monaco itself at the beginning of the 20th century. However, you can still play real roulette in the casino. The Constanta Aquarium is one of the best in the world. A huge number of species of marine fauna and flora are presented here. The territory is distinguished by the scale of the buildings. Some tourists spend the whole day here, happily observing the harmonious flow of life of underwater inhabitants.

The port waters will delight travelers with a kaleidoscope of ships bringing cargo from many countries on the planet. The port, being one of the largest in Europe, has the ability to receive virtually any ships that pass through the Suez Canal. The highlight of the port is the ancient Greek and Ottoman ships forever chained to the pier. In addition, the embankment is rich in other historical values, for example, models of ships dating back to different eras of the development of navigation.
