Hero of Russia Eduard Belan. Archipelago Holy Rus' Belan doctor

Eduard was born in Magadan, where he went to school. Now they say “grew up in a simple family.” But what does “downtime” mean? Do your parents have no titles, higher education, or a large apartment? Yes, there were no titles, no “higher”, no choir. But they managed to raise their son to be a real person, and this is far from easy.

As a child, Edik, like any boy, loved to play pranks. But pranks did not interfere with his studies: he graduated from school with a medal. He didn’t withdraw in any company, immediately made people feel comfortable and instantly gained respect. An excellent athlete, he never missed a single school sports day.

Already in high school (the family then moved to Lipetsk) I realized that I wanted to become a doctor. Entered the Voronezh State Medical Institute named after N.N. Burdenko. After finishing his second year, he joined the army and served in the air force. Then there was an internship, special courses - and now Eduard Borisovich is already a professional surgeon.

He really wanted to work in his specialty. True, at first things didn’t work out - there were no vacancies in Lipetsk. However, Belan soon got a job at the Internal Affairs Directorate hospital.
And everyday life flowed by. Patients were brought to the hospital every day in very different conditions. Edward did not take anything into account: neither free time, nor fatigue, nor a small salary. There was no case where he abandoned a patient, refused him or “pushed” him to another doctor. He only treated his household members himself. Thus, his wife Margarita was tormented for a long time by an ingrown toenail. Edward operated on her at home, for which his friends jokingly reproached him for his addiction to torture. If only they knew what awaited their friend...

The first time Belan went on a business trip to Dagestan was in 1998. His task is to organize the work of mobile hospitals. He volunteered to go himself, successfully completed everything planned and returned. And shortly before the second business trip (it shouldn’t have happened at all, but Eduard’s colleague got sick and he volunteered to go), a program was shown on TV about military men who had been captured.

“You know,” the surgeon admitted to his wife, “at school we often wrote essays about betrayal.” And all my classmates unanimously said that they despise such weaklings. But now I looked at the Russian guys who learned the horrors of captivity. Yes, I understand that we must despise those who immediately went over to the enemy’s side and surrendered their own. What if you couldn’t stand the torture? Is it possible to condemn someone for this? Nobody knows their physical limits. Only those who have gone through this themselves and have not broken down can rightfully call such people traitors.

... September 5, 1999, Dagestan, Novolakskoye village. The district cultural center, in its gym is the headquarters of the Lipetsk riot police. Quarter to seven in the morning. Lieutenant Alexey Tokarev and the detachment doctor Eduard Belan came out to check the posts. The officers did not have time to move far when, from the dense greenery, the barrel of a sniper rifle rested directly on Tokarev’s chest. The militants’ plan was simple: play for surprise, capture the officers and extort from them all the information regarding the forces and weapons of the Lipetsk people.

However, Alexey was not taken aback, grabbed the trunk, raised it up, hit the bandit and ran. The thought was pounding in my head: to warn my friends... Tokarev was hit by two bullets: one shot through the kidney, the other through the liver. But he still managed to get to the gym. But Eduard Belan could not escape - two bandits attacked him at the same time. It remained in the hands of the militants.

Next to the house of culture there was a Dagestan police station. The bandits immediately invited their “compatriots” to abandon the Lipetsk policemen, but they refused.

The tactics of the “warriors of Islam” were: wait for reinforcements and destroy them from an ambush. A tank and two armored infantry vehicles made their way to our aid, but they were destroyed. A platoon of policemen trying to break through to the riot police was also driven back by fire.

The Lipetsk residents realized that their conversations were being listened to, and they would have to fight themselves. And the strength is twenty-five to two hundred. But the militants didn’t know this. They believed that there were at least seventy soldiers in the gym. But they could not obtain accurate information from their prisoner, Eduard Belan, through any torture. He was silent, and among his own people he was listed as missing.

There is one more fact in the events of that terrible day that cannot be ignored.

Among our policemen there were five guys who graduated from the same school. They studied in the same parallel class - Mikhail Arkhipchenkov, Sergei Nikonov, Oleg Kovalchuk, Vladimir Valyaev, Lev Oreshnikov. We sat in the same classes, listened to the same teachers. They quarreled, made peace and did not know that the lives of others would one day depend on the endurance and courage of each...

Meanwhile, it was already announced on Dagestan television that “the bandits slaughtered all the employees of the local police and the Lipetsk riot police.” The news immediately became the main news on central television channels. The announcers also announced that only part of the detachment was in Novolakskoye. “Which group is mine in?” - thought every mother...

The battle lasted twenty hours. And during it, Eduard, in some unthinkable way, snatched a megaphone from one of the militants and shouted with all his strength: “Guys, hold on! I won’t give anyone away!”

An exhausted, torn doctor... He already realized that he was ready to endure everything... He decided to die. And the militants, seeing that they would not get anything from him, wanted to force Edward to treat the bandits. To which he replied:

“I took the Hippocratic oath to treat people, not animals.”

And realizing that all their methods were useless, the bandits became completely brutal from powerlessness. They mutilated Edward and killed...

Our first attempt to get out of the encirclement was unsuccessful. But at night they broke through and reached their own.

...On September 17, on her wedding anniversary, Margarita Belan and her five-year-old daughter Tanechka received notification of the death of her husband and father.

In his house there is still a guitar hanging on the wall, a military uniform and a wedding suit in the closet. As if their owner went out for a walk and will return soon.

And in the hospital of the Internal Affairs Directorate, on the door of the office where Hero of Russia Eduard Belan used to receive patients, there is still a sign with his name hanging on it.

Belan Eduard Borisovich
9. 1. 1970 - 5. 9. 1999
Hero of Russia

Belan Eduard Borisovich - surgeon of the emergency medical care department of the hospital at the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Lipetsk region, senior lieutenant of internal affairs
services.

Born on January 9, 1970 in Magadan. After military service in the Missile Forces, he entered the Voronezh State Medical Institute named after Burdenko. Then he worked in the medical unit of the Svobodny Sokol plant. In service in the internal affairs bodies since April 1, 1996. Twice he went on business trips to the North Caucasus.

Died on September 5, 1999 in Dagestan in Novolaksk. During the Wahhabi attack on Dagestan, he was among the first to be captured by the militants. He was tortured, demanding to know the names of the commanders and the location of the riot police's combat positions. Then, when they found out that he was a doctor, they tried to force him to provide assistance to the wounded bandits. But Edward refused to answer questions or provide assistance. Then he was mutilated and brutally killed.

The title of Hero of the Russian Federation was awarded posthumously to Eduard Borisovich Belan on October 22, 1999.

It was no secret that in August 1999, militants were gathering in almost all regions of Chechnya bordering Dagestan. Some villages in the south of Dagestan were captured by the Wahhabis, and they had to be driven out from there with the help of aviation and heavy artillery. The capture of populated areas followed the same scenario: militants infiltrated the territory of Dagestan under the guise of civilians, stockpiling weapons and ammunition in pre-prepared combat positions and in supposed defense areas.

In Novolakskoye, the Lipetsk riot police were stationed in the gym of the House of Culture. Early in the morning, the squad doctor, senior lieutenant of the internal service, Eduard Belan, volunteered to go with the platoon commander, police lieutenant Alexei Tokarev, to check the performance of police officers at the posts and assess the situation in the territory adjacent to the mosque.

As soon as the officers reached the fence separating the territory of the mosque from the crooked street overgrown with bushes along the edges, the barrel of a sniper rifle rested directly on Tokarev’s chest from the thick greenery, and immediately a bearded face appeared from the bush. A few seconds would be enough to move the machine gun into the firing position with a learned movement. But in such an environment - under the barrel of a sniper gun - any unnecessary movement can cost your life. The bandits hoped that with surprise they would be able to stun the police and capture them without resistance. But Alexey was not taken aback, grabbed the barrel of the rifle, raised it over his head and kicked the bearded man in the groin. At that time, two other bandits attacked Eduard Belan and threw him to the ground. Tokarev pushed away the militants who had piled on him and rushed towards the House of Culture. It was necessary to warn about the attack.

Realizing that it would not be possible to suddenly capture the police, the militants opened fire with small arms. The bearded man raised his sniper rifle and, almost without aiming, sent two bullets after Tokarev. The crooked, broken streets saved Alexey. Having already turned the corner, he - wounded - fell into the dusty powder. Other bursts of machine gun fire passed over his head, causing no harm. With his kidney and liver shot, Tokarev found the strength to get up and run to the gym under crossfire from both sides.

A few minutes earlier, the police department had already received a signal from patrol groups that the militants were moving deeper into the area. Both Dagestan and Lipetsk policemen immediately armed themselves and, when the first shots were fired by the militants, they were already in combat positions.

The regional department building was nearby, and it was supposed to be guarded by riot police. After the redeployment of the riot police to the building of the police department, the militants invited the Dagestani policemen to leave quickly. They even promised to give them weapons if only they would abandon the Lipetsk policemen. But they did not make a deal with the militants. It was decided to fight back together and get out of the encirclement together. After this, the bandits abandoned all diplomacy and, at dusk, opened fire to kill.

The wounded policemen were placed on the second floor, where the likelihood of “catching” a bullet or grenade fragment was much lower. To dispel any doubts, local police officers often came up to them and reassured them: “Don’t worry, they will only get to you over our corpses!”

At first the militants waited. The tactics of their actions have been worked out since the Chechen war: block some unit, wait for the arrival of reinforcements and destroy it from an ambush. A tank and two infantry fighting vehicles with soldiers of the internal troops tried to get through to help the riot police. The militants destroyed them. A platoon of police officers trying to break into the blocked district department from the direction of Kha-savyurt was driven back by massive fire from all types of weapons. Then the besieged realized that their radio conversations were being listened to by militants. Calling for help means endangering the lives of other police officers or soldiers.

Police Major Sergei Skovorodin and Police Major Muslim Dakhkhaev decided to get out on their own. The Novolak policemen knew the area well. Muslim Dakhkhaev determined with a high degree of probability that the militants were waiting for them to break through to their own people across the river. That's where they most likely set up an ambush. It was decided to break through towards Chechnya and further along the administrative border, to the positions of the federal forces. By 8 o'clock in the morning we reached the village of Novokuli - our own people were already there. During the breakout from the blocked village, Novolak policemen lost 14 people killed and 8 people were wounded. Lipetsk riot police killed one and six were injured. Doctor Eduard Belan was still listed as missing.

It was announced on Dagestan television that the Lipetsk riot police were surrounded by bandits and all the employees were slaughtered. These were probably the plans of the militants. Or perhaps, in the event of a surprise attack, it would have been difficult to count on a different outcome. If the selfless actions of Alexei Tokarev and Eduard Belan had not revealed this surprise.

The news of the blockade in the building of the police department and the gym of the House of Culture of the Lipetsk riot police immediately became the main news of TV channels. The facts, one more tragic than the other, kept the relatives and friends of the police officers who fought in Dagestan glued to their TV screens for several days. Everyone knew that only part of the detachment, twenty-five people, was in Novolakskoye. "Which group is mine in?" - thought every mother, wife, sister. Everyone secretly hoped that it was not the one that was waging a bloody battle in Novolakskoye.

Relatives of the riot police addressed their questions to the commander of the detachment, police lieutenant colonel Grigory Dushkin. And he himself only knew what was reported on television. And suddenly the thought struck him - to call the Novolaksky District Department of Internal Affairs. I picked up the phone, dialed the phone number, and - lo and behold! - they answered there. Although the audibility was disgusting, we talked. But as a result of this conversation, it was largely impossible to clarify the situation. When bullets are whistling all around, there is no time to report to the commander in full form. Lieutenant Colonel Dushkin only learned that by the evening the situation had become more complicated, there were wounded, Alexey Tokarev was seriously wounded, and the detachment doctor, senior police lieutenant Eduard Belan, was missing. Later, official information about the death of Andrei Teperik was received.

It was not possible to find out anything more about the fate of Eduard Belan until the commander of the Lipetsk riot police went to Dagestan with a specific task: to sort everything out on the spot, to remove wounded soldiers and the bodies of the dead from there. While still in Makhachkala, Grigory Ivanovich learned from one of the local residents of Novolaksky, an eyewitness to the tragedy, that the militants tortured Eduard Belan, demanding to know the names of the commanders and the location of the combat positions of the riot police. Then, when they found out that he was a doctor, they tried to force him to provide assistance to the wounded bandits. But Edward refused to answer questions or provide assistance... Then he was mutilated and brutally killed.

The feat of doctor Eduard Belan

The feat of doctor Eduard Belan

If everything had turned out differently, Eduard Belan would have turned 45 this year. Total. He would have been a young, but highly respected and experienced surgeon. But fate decreed otherwise: Eduard Belan, Hero of Russia, died on September 5, 1999 in the Novolaksky district of Dagestan. He died a terrible, martyr's death, but saved his fellow soldiers from death.
