About the monastery
Pokrovo-Tervenicheskiy convent– one of the youngest Russian monasteries. He's on the edge Leningrad region in the village of Tervenichi, Lodeynopolsky district. Nowadays, most of the monasteries in Russia have been restored on the site of destroyed monasteries, i.e. where monastic life once existed.
The monastery arose from a sisterhood formed on the basis of the Orthodox community at the Church of the Holy Martyrs Faith, Hope, Love and their Mother Sophia in St. Petersburg, where the monastery compound is now located. The birthday of the monastery is considered to be June 1, 1991. It was on this day that the future nuns of the monastery, led by its founder and confessor, then a young hieromonk, and now Bishop of Blagoveshchensk and Tyndinsky Lukian /Kutsenko/, first came to Tervenichy in search of a place for a monastery. That same summer, with the blessing of Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga Ioann /Snychev/, the Intercession Sisterhood was formed in Tervenichy, which received the status of a monastery in 1997. The leadership was taken over by one of the first nuns of the sisterhood, the current abbess Luciana /Ryseva/.
The Intercession-Tervenichesky Monastery cannot boast ancient history. However, not only pilgrimage tours go to this monastery. Ordinary travelers also come there to plunge into the spiritual and measured life of the nuns. Yes, the churches and chapels of the monastery are new, but that is not the point. The entire way of life of the sisters is imbued with the spirit of ancient monastic asceticism. The nuns do not live in seclusion and hospitably receive visitors. History of the monastery
Many monasteries on the territory former USSR were founded on the site of old ones closed by the Soviet regime. But in the village of Tervenichi there is no monastery until October Revolution there wasn't. Here there was only a parish church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. Naturally it was destroyed new government. What is interesting about the Tervenichesky Monastery? The fact that it was formed much later than the community inhabiting it. The sisterhood was formed back in recent years USSR at the Church of Faith, Hope, Love and Sophia, which was located in Leningrad. And in the summer of 1991, women who had chosen religious life began to look for a place for their future monastery. They visited the village of Tervenichi, which belongs to the Lodeynopolsky district of the Leningrad region. The sisters liked the place around the destroyed Assumption Church. The spiritual father of the community, Hieromonk Lucian, petitioned the Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga to establish a new monastery. And received permission to found a monastery dedicated to the Intercession Holy Mother of God. The monastery was assigned to the Tikhvin diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Tervenichesky Convent: description
It took years to build temples, chapels and rooms with cells. Only on April 17, 1997, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church made a decision to grant the sisterhood the status of a monastic monastery. The nuns planted a vegetable garden with their own hands, built a livestock farm for the production of dairy products, and they work in a sewing and icon-painting workshop. The young Tervenichesky Monastery is also developing geographically. In the neighboring village of Svirskoye, a monastery courtyard was erected. And in the village of Pirozero a skete with a special temple was built - the icon of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice”. The sisters’ connection with the St. Petersburg Church of Faith, Hope, Love and Sophia was not broken. A monastery courtyard was also built there. Now the monastery is inhabited by about fifty sisters, headed by Abbess Luciana. Some of them live not in the main monastery, but in farmsteads or in a monastery.
Temples of the monastery
Tervenicheskiy Monastery was consecrated in honor of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God. Therefore main temple also bears this name. But the parish church, which used to receive believers from the village of Tervenici, has not been forgotten. Through the efforts of the sisters, the Mother of God was re-erected. In this church, in its lower tier, there is a “cave” temple in honor of the saints Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The abandoned cemetery of the village was put in order, and a chapel was built on it, consecrated in the name of the Resurrection of Christ. Even the cattle in the monastery are under the protection of God. On the farm of the monastery there is a chapel dedicated to St. George the Victorious. During the construction of the monastery, the sisters “found” a source, which they call holy. The Chapel of the Life-Giving Trinity was also erected above the spring.
How to get to the monastery
The Intercession-Tervenichesky Convent regularly conducts excursions for ordinary tourists who want to explore the buildings of the monastery. In addition to churches and chapels, of interest are buildings with cells, a refectory, a hospice house, as well as baths - the Upper Bath and the Lower Bath, standing on the shore of a beautiful lake. During religious holidays, the monastery receives worshipers. After all, within the walls of the monastery there are many saints whom pilgrims long to venerate. If someone comes to the monastery for more than one day, then you can spend the night in a hospice house, where you will be served meals. In addition to excursions and pilgrimage tours, there is another type of stay in the monastery. For those who want to work for the glory of God and for the benefit of the monastery, trips from the compound in St. Petersburg are organized on Fridays. The Tervenicheskiy churchyard was mentioned already in 1137 in the charter of the Novgorod prince Svyatoslav Olgovich, where all the churchyards of the Ladoga and Onega regions were described. Tervenicheskiy Pogost united into different times dozens, sometimes hundreds of surrounding villages. With the spread of Christianity to the north, Tervenichy became the spiritual center of the region. In the census of 1582-1583. It is mentioned that in the center of the churchyard there were two churches, and the churchyard itself was named Mikhailovsky in honor of the Archangel Michael.
Above the lake on the mountain in 1861, with money raised by the “whole world”, village residents built a stone church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was white with a bright blue dome with golden stars, rich in paintings and beautiful icons. At the beginning of the 20th century, the large village had a parochial school, a school of the Ministry of Public Education, and a zemstvo hospital.
In 1935 the temple was closed. After the cessation of services, a club was located in the church, then it was used as a grain warehouse, and then fertilizers. Fertilizers corroded the plaster and wall paintings disappeared. When the roof was dismantled and the windows were broken, the temple began to quickly collapse. The old cemetery was practically destroyed. With the destruction of the temple, the destruction of the village began.
TEMPLE OF THE INTEGRATION OF THE HOLY VIRGIN OF THE TERVENICHESKY MONASTERY By the time the nuns arrived, the only old building left from the churchyard was the dilapidated Assumption Church. After many years of devastation, the first prayer service at its ruins in the summer of 1991 was performed by Hieromonk Lukian (Kutsenko), at that time the rector of the St. Petersburg Church in the name of the holy martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and Sophia. The parishioners of this church prayed, among whom were the future first nuns of the monastery - nuns Sofia (Artemenko) and Vera (Novikova), who settled here on July 1. With the blessing of Metropolitan John (Snychev), a sisterhood was founded here. The first tonsure took place on October 13, 1991, on the eve of the Intercession holiday, the second - on December 31. On the very holiday, the first liturgy was served in the destroyed church, which was attended by 29 pilgrims.
TERVENICHI ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD The nuns received gracious help in setting up the monastery from the Queen of Heaven. In February 1992, the Mother of God appeared to the confessor of the monastery in a dream, standing on Tervenicheskaya land and pointing at the icon at her feet, from under which water flowed. This image was reminiscent of the Kasperov-Korsun Icon of Tenderness, familiar to the confessor from childhood, especially revered in the Odessa diocese. One artist there found a list of the Kasperov icon, similar to the one seen in a dream. In Odessa Uspensky cathedral After the prayer service, it was attached to the prototype, then transported to Tervenichy. With the blessing of Metropolitan John of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, the image received the name Terveni Icon of the Mother of God. The celebration of the icon takes place twice a year: May 19 (June 1) and October 1 (14).
TERVENICHI. ICON OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD IN THE CHAPEL OVER THE SOURCE In the spring, at the place indicated by the Mother of God, a source was discovered and a well was dug. Cases of healings have been recorded from the icon of the Mother of God and the water of the source. For the sisterhood, the icon of the Appearance of the Mother of God in Tervenichy in 1991 was also painted. Both icons streamed myrrh in 1994-1995. He composed special prayers calling the Mother of God “the monastery and our northern region, Protection and Intercession.” On the eve of the Intercession in 1996, an unusual thing was seen above the cathedral church natural phenomenon- “a bright seven-color rainbow, the arms of which were turned upward, as if the Mother of God had spread Her Veil.”
IGUMENA LUKIANA – ABBES OF THE INTEGRATION-TERVENICHSKY MONASTERY On April 14, 1997, by decision of the Holy Synod, the Intercession Sisterhood received the status of a monastery. The nun who headed it, Luciana (Ryseva), became the first abbess.
Those entering the monastery are greeted by a memorial cross dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos, the abbess of Mount Athos. Another worship cross was erected in 1996 on the way to the source, east of the church, at the descent from the hill. Above the spring with healing water there is a stone chapel with a three-tier belfry, built in 1997 on the site of a former wooden frame.
The temple and its interior decoration, two new stone chapels, two cell buildings, a refectory with a temple in honor of Anthony and Theodosius of the Kiev-Pechersk - the founders of monasticism in Rus', as well as a barnyard, a bathhouse and other outbuildings were built. Outside the monastery territory, the old house where the sisters initially lived has been converted into a hotel. In 1997, a monastery skete was opened in the neighboring village of Pirozero.
REPLACE CHURCH OF THE DORMSION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD WITH A LOWER CAVE TEMPLE IN HONOR OF THE CATHEDRAL OF THE PREP. FATHERS OF KIEV-PECHERSK Today, the Tervenic Icon of the Mother of God is located in the southern aisle of the Intercession Church, the main church of the monastery. In a beautiful gilded icon case, the icon is decorated with expensive crosses, chains, and other offerings from people in gratitude to the Mother of God for the help from Her miraculous image. Particles of the relics of the saints are reverently kept here: Sergius of Radonezh, Macarius of Kyiv, Daniel of Pereyaslavl, Neil of Stolbensky, Jonah of Odessa.
Now there are 26 sisters in the monastery, of which 6 are robed and 11 are robed nuns*.

CHAPEL IN HONOR OF THE ICON “LIFE-GIVING SPRING” AT THE SITE OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD After praying at the liturgy in the Church of the Intercession, we plunged into the waters of the lake, after which we served a prayer service with an akathist to the Mother of God in the chapel above the holy spring. Grace reigns here, and it seems as if the sky itself has come closer to the earth. July is the time of flowering, and it was so joyful to see huge bouquets of wildflowers decorating the temples and chapels of the monastery. SKIT ON PYROZERO
From the monastery to the monastery - 20 kilometers. It was founded in the village of Pirozero near the confluence of the Sarki River and the Kapsha River in January 1997. The former parish wooden church of the Presentation of the Lord, consecrated in 1913 using material from the previous church of 1713, became the monastery church. It was built in the Russian architectural style and decorated with rich carvings. The temple has not operated since 1928, and was officially closed in 1936, stripped of its endings and bell tower, and converted into a hostel for townspeople who came to work on collective farms. With the blessing of Bishop Vladimir, on May 29, 1997, it was reconsecrated in honor of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon of the Mother of God. This icon became famous for helping those suffering from drunkenness and drug addiction, this universal disaster in the villages and cities of Russia; and it is no coincidence that the monastery’s temple was consecrated in her honor - another island appeared where monastic prayer is constantly offered for those possessed by such ailments.
WOODEN (BURNED) TEMPLE IN THE SKITE OF TERVENICHI MONASTERY On the night of February 21, 1997, a miracle happened here: the flow of tears from the eyes of the Most Holy Theotokos on the image of the Tervenic Icon of the Mother of God and the streaming of myrrh. For Easter of the same year, a modest iconostasis of the temple was made. Separate from the church there is a wooden house - a cell block and a barnyard. In 2002, the church burned down, and now a new stone church is being built.
ICON “INEXHAUSTABLE CHALICE” IN THE SKETT OF TERVENICHI MONASTERY From the very foundation of the monastery, the nuns who lived there took upon themselves the feat of prayer for alcoholics and drug addicts. Every day they read an akathist to the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon, remembering the names of those for whom the pilgrims who came to the monastery asked to pray.
This synodik grew every year. There are always three nuns in the monastery: schema-nun Sophia - she constantly reads the Psalter, remembering the Orthodox for health and repose, the second nun - Maria and the elder sister - nun Silouana. A house was erected on the territory of the monastery, in which a kitchen and a refectory were installed. Another residential building stood here before. And then the sisters began to accept drug-addicted children into the monastery.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION IN THE SKETE “More than 80 people have been here in four years. We don’t invite anyone ourselves. Guys and girls bring their friends here who suffer from this terrible disease - drug addiction. Sometimes parents bring their children, beg them to take them, say that they have tried everything, paid huge amounts of money - but nothing helps.
We have 15-16 people permanently living with us. They live as one family, they are like children to me. They see self-love, kindness, because no one here calls them drug addicts. Finding themselves in a completely different environment, seeing this beauty, our joy, participating in prayers and labors, they begin to change. Over the years, we had to send away five people - it was impossible to stop them, as they continued to take drugs and seduce others. Five more left on their own. But the rest are holding on.
PRAYER AT THE SOURCE IN THE SKETTE OF TERVENICHI MONASTERY They all stopped injecting and taking drugs. Every day they read an akathist to the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon and perform a prayer rule. On holidays we sing lunch. The children learned to sing and read in Church Slavonic. After prayer, everyone goes together to obedience - they work in the gardens, plant flowers, work in the kitchen, whoever can - and participates in construction. A special joy is going to the forest to pick berries and mushrooms, then everything collected is dried, cooked, and canned. The guys themselves (!) repaired an old ZIS-51 truck, it’s already forty years old, but they managed to do it, and now they drive it, so we miraculously have transport.
CHURCH IN HONOR OF THE ICON “INEXHAIBLE CHALICE” IN THE SKETE OF TERVENICHI MONASTERY There is one girl - her parents took everything abroad, and now she cleans toilets - and she does it with pleasure. Her parents arrived and wanted to pick her up, but she didn’t say anything: “I don’t want to go home, I’ll stay here!” They had to agree. Those who have lived with us constantly write and send photographs. Some have already gotten married and given birth to children. And what’s interesting is that newborns come to be baptized with us, but they don’t want to go to another church. So I’ve already been a grandmother several times, they call me mom, and their children are my grandchildren. Many hold on, if, of course, they find themselves in this life - in study, work, family happiness.
Children are very different, but there are no divisions here. We truly have a family, they can only be helped with love and they flourish here. Not everything works out right away; old habits are difficult to eradicate. But little by little the children become involved in the church’s prayer life. They are very receptive to what their friends are doing and therefore are drawn into the rhythm of our hermitage life. I remember how I went with one of our charges to Father Nikolai on the island of Zalita. She complained about herself to the elder, that her hair was bad, and her gait was wobbling, and she could not break the habit of old habits. Father said to her so kindly:
- Tanya, trust God! He will comb your hair, and straighten your gait, and fix everything in your life.

They really feel good here and don’t want to go home. They are still children and we try not to bother them with strictness. But fortunately, they had already managed to build this house and were able to set up a room for prayer here. It's good here, blissful. The kids love being here and are starting to love praying. This is great joy and consolation for us.

REFEATURE IN THE SKETT OF TERVENICHI MONASTERY IN WINTER Pilgrims constantly come to us and submit notes about the health of drug addicts and drinkers. And the guys participate in common prayer not only for themselves, for each other, but also for many people suffering from the same illness. This gives them a lot, strengthens them, helps them start a different life. Their faces change too. We do not have specialists in narcology or nurses with medical education here. I think that the Mother of God herself helps these children become real people. One sixteen-year-old girl lived with us for a year and a half without leaving home. It was so hard for her to accept new life- without buzz, without boys, in chastity and purity. But she became different. It is the grace of God that such a transformation can happen to these children. We love them, and they feel it, they try not to upset us, they really try. And no one is eager to go home.
FOR THE CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION AT THE SKITE On Sundays and major holidays we go to our Tervenichesky Monastery - the guys there confess and receive communion. We also have a holy spring nearby - they run to it and bring water. In their free time from obedience, they go swimming in the lake - the summer is hot, the water is like fresh milk.”
What we saw here with our own eyes pleased and surprised. With what love and care everything is arranged in this small hermitage. Flowers were planted all around and flower beds were made. The gardens are well-groomed, the house is clean - and all this is done with childish hands. The monastery stands in a birch grove, all illuminated by the sun. And it seems that the love of the Mother of God Herself is poured out on everyone here. Some amazing feeling visited us in this monastery - quiet joy, peace of heart, as if Heaven had really approached the earth in this wondrous place. And God grant that everything will be arranged here for the glory of God and the Most Pure Love. So that a new temple appears, new cells for children whom the Lord heals from a terrible illness and returns to the bosom of the Church, on the path leading to eternity.
70 kilometers from the Vvedeno-Oyatsky Monastery there is another stunning monastery.
The Intercession-Tervenichesky Convent is today one of the few monasteries founded at the end of the twentieth century.

The last priest to serve in this church, following his predecessors Father Vladimir Pogranitsky and Father Nikolai Znamensky, was Father Vasily Struchkov. The parish priest taught the Law of God at the school. Father Vasily, according to parishioners, was a kind and sympathetic person. In 1935, when the temple was closed, he was arrested, and there is no information about his further fate.

The first sisters appeared at the ruins of the church in the summer of 1991. A sad sight presented themselves to them: bare crumbling brick, gaping window openings, in place of the altar - piles of rubbish; The rickety crosses of the old cemetery are overgrown with weeds.

Now there are 26 sisters in the monastery, including 6 nuns and 11 nuns, and it is managed by the abbess, nun Luciana (Ryseva).

In 1997, a monastery skete was opened in the neighboring village of Pirozero.
Each monastery has its own shrines - especially revered miraculous icons, relics of saints. These shrines guard, protect the monastery, and serve for its inhabitants as a visible sign of God’s mercy.
In February 1992, one of the monks in a subtle dream saw the appearance of the Mother of God - the Most Holy Theotokos, standing on Tervenicheskaya land, pointed to the icon lying at Her feet, from under which water flowed. This icon, in its writing, was reminiscent of Kasperovskaya-Korsunskaya - one of the oldest iconographic types called “Tenderness”.
In the spring, at the place indicated by the Mother of God, a spring was discovered, the waters of which were consecrated. Soon, for convenience, a log house was erected there and a well was dug. It is noteworthy that even earlier they tried to find water at this place, but then all attempts led to nothing.

On the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord in 1994, the myrrh flow of a newly painted image began, depicting the Appearance of the Mother of God in Tervenichy - drops of myrrh, like dew, covered the bottom of the Theotokos’s clothes and the Tervenich icon lying at Her feet. Soon the Tervenic Icon itself began to become myrrhized. The myrrh-casting continued for a year and was recorded on videotape.
Before the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in 1996, sisters and pilgrims worked at the Intercession Church, putting the surrounding area in order. The weather was sunny, suddenly blue sky next to the dome everyone saw a bright seven-color rainbow, the arms of which were turned upward, as if the Mother of God had spread Her Veil. This phenomenon continued for several hours, to the great consolation of all the workers.
In the winter of 1997, in the recently opened monastery, a photographic image of the Tervenic Icon of the Mother of God was filled with myrrh - tears flowed in large drops from the eyes of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Soon disaster struck - the old cell building, donated to the monastery by the collective farm, burned down, along with workshops and utility rooms. There was a cell church in it, where the revered image resided. Of all that was in the building, only this icon was saved, with which they later walked around the burning house. Sparks flew in all directions, but not a single wooden building located a few meters away caught fire - the Queen of Heaven protected Her abode. Like many other monasteries, the Intercession-Tervenichesky Monastery went through the test of fire, but protected by the intercession of the Mother of God, who bestowed and preserved Her icon, it rose in even greater beauty.
This sad event was preceded by great joy for the monastery - on April 14, 1997, by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church The Pokrovsky sisterhood received the status of a monastery, and the nun Luciana, who headed it, became the first abbess with the right to wear a golden pectoral cross.
The monastery farm has also grown: there are now six cows, horses, sheep, goats, and chickens in the barnyard; On 13 hectares of land donated by the local collective farm, a garden is laid out, vegetables are planted, and oats are sown. The sisters carry out obedience not only in the barnyard and vegetable garden, there is obedience in the hotel room, the altar room, the candle maker, and the refectory room. The oldest nuns read the Psalter daily. Sewing and art workshops are open at the monastery. All the icons of the Intercession-Tervenichesky Monastery, as well as many icons in other churches and monasteries, were painted in this workshop. In August 1998, for the first time in the history of the region and the monastery, the ruling bishop, Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga Vladimir, visited the monastery. There are now about 40 nuns in the monastery, but not all of them live in the monastery itself: some of the obedient sisters live in monasteries and in the courtyard. The monastery itself is dominated mainly by agricultural work. The monastery has its own fields and vegetable gardens, its own farm, its own home production of cheese, feta cheese and other dairy products. For divine services, the sisters bake prosphora themselves. There are art and sewing workshops.
