Summary of the auditor in parts. A brief retelling of the "Inspector" by action

Brief retelling

"Inspector" Gogol N.V. (very briefly)

As an epigraph to the play "The Inspector General", the genre of which the author defined as a comedy in 5 acts, Gogol used the proverb "There is nothing to blame on the mirror if the face is crooked." That is, the author emphasized the typicality of the characters depicted, the authenticity. There is no dramatic conflict as such in the play; the writer occupies the genre of morality. The Inspector General is considered to be a social and political comedy.

The mayor informs the "most unpleasant news" to the officials gathered in his house - an auditor arrives incognito in the city. Officials are horrified - riots are everywhere in the city. It is suggested that there may soon be a war, and the auditor is sent to find out if there is treason in the city. The mayor objects to this: “Where does treason come from in the county town? Yes, if you jump from here for three years, you won’t reach any state. ” The mayor insists that each of the officials put things in order in his subordinate area. That is, in the hospital, you need to write illnesses in Latin, give the patients clean caps, in court - remove the geese from the waiting room, etc. He reprimands his subordinates that they are mired in bribery. So, for example, judge Lyap-kin-Tyapkin takes bribes with greyhound puppies.

The postmaster is still afraid that the arrival of the auditor may mark the imminent start of the war with the Turks. To this, the mayor asks him for a favor - to print and read every letter that comes to the post office. The postmaster gladly agrees, especially since this occupation - printing and reading other people's letters - has long been familiar to him and dearly loved.

Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky appear, who report that, apparently, the auditor has settled in a hotel. This man, Khlestakov Ivan Alexandrovich, has been living in a hotel for a week and does not pay money for accommodation. The mayor decides that he should visit this man.

The mayor orders the quarterly to sweep all the streets clean, then gives the following orders: to place the quarterly around the City, to remove the old fence, in case of questions from the auditor, to answer that the church under construction burned down (in fact, it was stolen).

The mayor's wife and daughter appear, burning with curiosity. Anna Andreevna sends a maid for her husband's droshky. She wants to find out everything about the auditor herself.

Khlestakov's servant Osip lies hungry on the master's bed and talks about how he and the master traveled from St. Petersburg two months ago, how the master lost all the money in cards, how he lives beyond his means, how he leads a useless life, because he does not do anything .

Khlestakov arrives and sends Osip to the innkeeper for dinner. The servant does not want to go, reminds the master that the accommodation has not been paid for three weeks and that the owner threatened to complain about him.

Khlestakov is very hungry and instructs the tavern servant to ask the owner for lunch on credit. Khlestakov dreams that he, in a luxurious St. Petersburg suit, rolls up to the gates of his parents' house, that he pays visits to his neighbors.

The tavern servant brings a very modest dinner, with which Khlestakov is very unhappy. Nevertheless, he eats everything brought.

Osip informs Khlestakov that a mayor has arrived who wants to see him. The mayor and Dobchinsky appear. Bobchinsky eavesdrops at the door throughout the entire phenomenon. Khlestakov and the mayor justify themselves to each other. The first promises that he will pay for the stay, the second that the proper order will be restored in the city. Khlestakov asks for a loan of money from the mayor, and he gives it to him, while giving twice as much as the requested amount. The mayor swears that he just came to check on the passers-by, since this is a common activity for him.

The mayor advises Khlestakov to postpone indefinitely the settlements with the tavern servant, which he does. The mayor invites Khlestakov to inspect the city's institutions in order to assess the order maintained in them. He himself sends his wife a note with Dobchinsky, in which he writes that she should prepare the room. Sends a note to Strawberry.

In the mayor's house, Anna Andreevna and her daughter Marya Antonovna are sitting at the window, waiting for some news. Dobchinsky, who appeared, retells to the ladies what he saw in the hotel, passes the note to Anna Andreevna. She gives orders to servants. The mayor's wife and daughter are discussing the clothes they are going to put on for the arrival of an important guest.

Osip brings Khlestakov's things and graciously "agrees" to taste simple dishes - porridge, cabbage soup, pies.

The mayor, Khlestakov and officials appear. Khlestakov had breakfast in the hospital, he liked everything very much, despite the fact that the patients all unexpectedly recovered, although they usually "recover like flies."

Khlestakov is interested in card establishments. The mayor swears that he has never played in his life, there are no such institutions in their city, that he uses all his time to serve the state.

The mayor introduces Khlestakov to his wife and daughter. The guest shows off in front of the ladies, especially in front of Anna Andreevna, assures her that he cannot stand ceremonies and that he is on friendly terms with all St. Petersburg officials. He easily communicates with Pushkin, and once even composed "Yuri Miloslavsky". Khlestakov boasts of his best house in Petersburg, where he gives dinners and balls. For lunch, they deliver him "a watermelon worth seven hundred rubles" and soup "in a saucepan from Paris." Khlestakov goes so far as to say that the minister himself comes to his house and once he managed an entire department at the request of 35,000 couriers. That is, Khlestakov lies completely. The mayor invites him to rest.

The officials gathered at the mayor's house discuss Khlestakov and come to the conclusion that if at least half of what he said is true, then their situation is very deplorable.

Anna Andreevna and Marya Antonovna are discussing Khlestakov, and each of them is sure that the guest paid attention to her.

The mayor is frightened in earnest. His wife, on the contrary, is confident that her irresistibility will have the proper effect on Khlestakov.

Those present ask Osip about what his master is like. The mayor gives Khlestakov's servant not only "for tea", but also "for donuts". Osip says that his master loves order.

The mayor, so that petitioners would not go to Khlestakov, puts two quartermen on the porch - Svistunov and Derzhimorda.

Strawberry, Lyap-kin-Tyapkin, Luka Lukich, Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky, the postmaster, enter on tiptoe into the room in the mayor's house. Lyap-kin-Tyapkin builds everyone in a military way, decides that Khlestakov should introduce himself one by one and give bribes. They argue among themselves who should go first.

Lyapkin-Tyapkin comes to Khlestakov first, money is squeezed in his fist, which he accidentally drops on the floor. He thinks that he has disappeared, but Khlestakov takes this money “on loan”. Lyapkin-Tyapkin is happy, he leaves.

The postmaster Shpekin comes next, who only does what he agrees with Khlestakov, who talks about a pleasant city. The guest also takes a "loan" from the postmaster, who leaves with a sense of accomplishment.

Luka Lukich, who has come to introduce himself, is trembling like an aspen leaf, his tongue is tangled, he is very frightened. Still, he manages to hand over the money to Khlestakov, and leaves.

Strawberries, when presented to the "auditor", recalls yesterday's breakfast, for which Khlestakov thanks him. Strawberry is sure that the "auditor" favors him, denounces other officials, and gives a bribe. Khlestakov promises that he will figure everything out.

When Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky Khlestakov come to introduce themselves, he directly demands money from them. Dobchinsky asks Khlestakov to drive his son legal, and Bobchinsky asks the "auditor" to inform the sovereign at an opportunity, "that Pyotr Ivanovich Bobchinsky lives in such and such a city."

Khlestakov finally realizes that he was mistakenly mistaken for an important official. This seems to him very funny, which he writes about in a letter to his friend Tryapichkin.

Osip advises his master to get out of the city as soon as possible. Noise is heard in the street - petitioners have come. Merchants complain about the mayor, who demands gifts for his name day twice a year, who selects the best goods. They bring food to Khlestakov, which he refuses. They give money, Khlestakov takes it.

A non-commissioned officer's widow appears, who demands justice,

- She was flogged for no reason. Then comes the locksmith, complaining that her husband was taken to the soldiers out of turn. Khlestakov promises to look into it.

Taking advantage of the moment, he confesses his love to Marya Antonovna. At first she is afraid that the guest is mocking her; provincial, but Khlestakov kneels, kisses his shoulder, swears his love.

Anna Andreevna appears, who drives her daughter away. Khlestakov kneels in front of her, says that he really loves her, but since she is married, he is forced to propose to her daughter.

The mayor enters, begs Khlestakov not to listen to what the merchants say about him, and the non-commissioned officer's widow flogged herself. Khlestakov asks for the hand of his daughter. Parents call Marya Antonovna and bless the young.

Khlestakov takes more money from his future father-in-law and leaves the city under the pretext of having to discuss the wedding with his father. Promises to return soon.

The mayor and his wife make plans for the future. They dream about how, after the wedding, their daughters will move to St. Petersburg. The mayor tells the merchants about the forthcoming wedding of his daughter with the "auditor" and threatens them with reprisals because they decided to complain. Merchants ask them to forgive. The mayor accepts the congratulations of the officials.

Dinner party at the mayor's house. He and his wife are arrogant, telling the guests that they are soon going to move to St. Petersburg, where the mayor will certainly receive the title of general. Officials ask not to forget about them, to which the mayor condescendingly agrees.

The postmaster appears with an open letter from Khlestakov to Tryapichka-well. It turns out that Khlestakov is not an auditor at all. In a letter, he gives caustic characteristics to city officials: "The mayor is stupid, like a gray gelding ... The postmaster ... drinks bitter ... Strawberries are a perfect pig in a yarmulke." The mayor is overwhelmed by the news. He understands that it is impossible to return Khlestakov, since the mayor himself ordered to give him the top three horses. “What are you laughing at? “You’re laughing at yourself!.. Oh, you!.. I still can’t come to my senses. Here, truly, if God wants to punish, then he will first take away the mind. Well, what was in this heliport that looked like an auditor? There was nothing! It's just that there was nothing like half a little finger

- and suddenly everything: the auditor! auditor! They are looking for the culprit who spread the rumor that Khlestakov is the auditor. They decide that it is Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky.

A gendarme appears and announces the arrival of a real auditor. Silent Scene: Everyone freezes in shock.

N. V. Gogol reflected almost all aspects of contemporary Russian reality. Masterfully, the author reveals, using the example of the image of the mayor, the contradiction between external importance and internal insignificance. The main goal of the writer is to depict the imperfections of society - abuses, arbitrariness of officials, the idle life of urban landlords, the hard life of the townspeople, and so on. The author does not limit himself to a satirical depiction of one county town, he considers the problems as all-Russian.

Frame from the film "The Government Inspector" (1952)

In a county town, from which “you ride for three years, you won’t reach any state,” the mayor, Anton Antonovich Skvoznik-Dmukhanovsky, gathers officials in order to report unpleasant news: he was notified by a letter from an acquaintance that “an auditor from St. , incognito. And with a secret order." The mayor - two rats of unnatural size dreamed all night - had a premonition of something bad. The reasons for the visit of the auditor are being sought, and the judge, Ammos Fedorovich Lyapkin-Tyapkin (who has read "five or six books, and therefore is somewhat free-thinking"), suggests a war being started by Russia. The mayor, meanwhile, advises Artemy Filippovich Strawberry, the trustee of charitable institutions, to put clean caps on the sick, to dispose of the strength of the tobacco they smoke, and in general, if possible, to reduce their number; and meets the full sympathy of Strawberry, who reveres that “a simple man: if he dies, then he will die anyway; If he recovers, then he will recover.” To the judge, the mayor points out “domestic geese with small caterpillars” that snoop underfoot in the front for petitioners; on the assessor, from whom from childhood "it gives away a little vodka"; on a hunting rapnik that hangs over the very closet with papers. With a discussion about bribes (and in particular, greyhound puppies), the mayor turns to Luka Lukich Khlopov, the superintendent of schools, and laments strange habits, “inseparable from an academic title”: one teacher constantly makes faces, another explains with such fervor that he does not remember himself (“Of course, it is Alexander the Macedonian hero, but why break the chairs? This is a loss to the treasury”).

The postmaster Ivan Kuzmich Shpekin appears, "a simple-minded person to the point of naivety." The mayor, fearing a denunciation, asks him to look through the letters, but the postmaster, having long been reading them out of pure curiosity ("you will read another letter with pleasure"), has not yet seen anything about the St. Petersburg official. Out of breath, the landowners Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky enter and, interrupting each other every minute, talk about a visit to a hotel tavern and a young man, observant (“and looked into our plates”), with such an expression on his face - in a word, precisely the auditor: “and he doesn’t pay money, and he doesn’t go, who would be if not him?

The officials disperse anxiously, the mayor decides to “go on parade to the hotel” and gives hasty instructions to the quarterly regarding the street leading to the tavern and the construction of a church at a charitable institution (do not forget that it began to “be built, but burned down”, otherwise someone will blurt out, what and was not built at all). The mayor with Dobchinsky leaves in great excitement, Bobchinsky runs after the droshky like a cockerel. Anna Andreevna, the mayor's wife, and Marya Antonovna, his daughter, appear. The first scolds her daughter for her sluggishness and asks the departing husband through the window if the newcomer has a mustache and what kind of mustache. Annoyed by the failure, she sends Avdotya for the droshky.

In a small hotel room, the servant Osip lies on a master's bed. He is hungry, complains about the owner who lost money, about his thoughtless extravagance and recalls the joys of life in St. Petersburg. Ivan Alexandrovich Khlestakov appears, a young stupid man. After a squabble, with increasing timidity, he sends Osip for dinner - if they don't give it, then for the owner. Explanations with the tavern servant are followed by a crappy dinner. Having emptied the plates, Khlestakov scolds, about this time the mayor inquires about him. In a dark room under the stairs, where Khlestakov lodges, they meet. Sincere words about the purpose of the trip, about the formidable father who called Ivan Alexandrovich from St. Petersburg, are mistaken for a skillful invention incognito, and the mayor understands his cries about his unwillingness to go to prison in the sense that the visitor will not cover up his misdeeds. The mayor, lost in fear, offers the visitor money and asks to move into his house, as well as to inspect - for the sake of curiosity - some institutions in the city, "somehow charitable and others." The visitor unexpectedly agrees, and, having written two notes on the tavern account, to Strawberry and his wife, the mayor sends Dobchinsky with them (Bobchinsky, who was diligently eavesdropping at the door, falls to the floor with her), and he goes with Khlestakov.

Anna Andreevna, waiting impatiently and anxiously for news, is still annoyed with her daughter. Dobchinsky comes running with a note and a story about the official that "he is not a general, but will not yield to the general", about his menacingness at the beginning and softening afterwards. Anna Andreevna reads a note where the enumeration of pickles and caviar is interspersed with a request to prepare a room for a guest and take wine from the merchant Abdulin. Both ladies, quarreling, decide which dress to wear to whom. The mayor and Khlestakov return, accompanied by Strawberry (whose labardan had just been eaten in the hospital), Khlopov and the indispensable Dobchinsky and Bobchinsky. The conversation concerns the successes of Artemy Filippovich: from the time he took office, all the sick "recover like flies." The mayor delivers a speech about his disinterested zeal. The exasperated Khlestakov is interested in whether it is possible to play cards somewhere in the city, and the mayor, understanding the trick in the question, strongly speaks out against the cards (not embarrassed in the least by his recent victory over Khlopov). Completely unleashed by the appearance of the ladies, Khlestakov tells how in St. Petersburg they took him for the commander-in-chief, that he and Pushkin were on friendly terms, how he once managed the department, which was preceded by persuasion and sending thirty-five thousand one couriers to him; he paints his unparalleled severity, predicts his imminent work as a field marshal, which inspires panic fear in the mayor and his entourage, in which fear everyone disperses when Khlestakov retires to sleep. Anna Andreevna and Marya Antonovna, arguing over who the newcomer looked at more, together with the mayor, vying with each other, ask Osip about the owner. He answers so ambiguously and evasively that, assuming an important person in Khlestakov, they only affirm themselves in that. The mayor orders police officers to stand on the porch in order to keep out merchants, petitioners and anyone who could complain.

Officials in the mayor’s house confer on what to do, decide to give the visitor a bribe and persuade Lyapkin-Tyapkin, famous for his eloquence (“every word, Cicero flew off the tongue”), to be the first. Khlestakov wakes up and scares them off. The utterly cowardly Lyapkin-Tyapkin, having entered with the intention of giving money, cannot even answer coherently how long he has been serving and what he has done; he drops the money and considers himself almost arrested already. Khlestakov, who raised the money, asks for a loan, for "he spent on the road." Talking with the postmaster about the pleasures of life in a county town, offering the superintendent of schools a cigar and the question of who, to his taste, is preferable - brunettes or blondes, embarrassing Strawberry with the remark that yesterday he was shorter, he takes from everyone in turn " loan" under the same pretext. Strawberries diversify the situation by denouncing everyone and offering to state their thoughts in writing. From Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky, Khlestakov immediately asks for a thousand rubles, or at least a hundred (however, he is content with sixty-five). Dobchinsky is fussing about his first child, born before marriage, wanting to make him a legitimate son - and he is hopeful. Bobchinsky asks, on occasion, to tell all the nobles in St. Petersburg: senators, admirals (“yes, if the sovereign has to do this, tell the sovereign too”) that “Peter Ivanovich Bobchinsky lives in such and such a city.”

Having sent the landlords away, Khlestakov sat down to write a letter to his friend Tryapichkin in St. Petersburg in order to describe a funny incident, how they took him for a "statesman." While the owner is writing, Osip persuades him to leave as soon as possible and succeeds in his arguments. Having sent Osip away with a letter and for horses, Khlestakov receives the merchants, who are loudly prevented by the quarterly Derzhimorda. They complain about the “insults” of the mayor, lend the requested five hundred rubles (Osip takes a sugar loaf, and much more: “a rope will come in handy on the road”). Reassured merchants are replaced by a locksmith and a non-commissioned officer's wife with complaints about the same mayor. Osip sticks out the rest of the petitioners. The meeting with Marya Antonovna, who, really, did not go anywhere, but only thought if her mother was here, ends with a declaration of love, a kiss from the lying Khlestakov and his repentance on his knees. Anna Andreevna, who suddenly appeared in anger, exposes her daughter, and Khlestakov, finding her still very “appetizing”, falls to her knees and asks for her hand. He is not embarrassed by Anna Andreevna's bewildered confession that she is "married in some way", he suggests "retiring under the canopy of the jets", for "for love there is no difference." Marya Antonovna, unexpectedly running in, receives a scolding from her mother and a marriage proposal from Khlestakov, who is still on his knees. The mayor enters, frightened by the complaints of the merchants who broke through to Khlestakov, and begs not to believe the scammers. He does not understand his wife's words about matchmaking until Khlestakov threatens to shoot himself. Not really understanding what is happening, the mayor blesses the young. Osip reports that the horses are ready, and Khlestakov announces to the completely lost family of the mayor that he is going to his rich uncle for only one day, borrows money again, sits in a carriage, accompanied by the mayor and his household. Osip carefully takes the Persian carpet on the mat.

After seeing off Khlestakov, Anna Andreevna and the mayor indulge in dreams of Petersburg life. The called merchants appear, and the triumphant mayor, having overtaken them with great fear, joyfully releases everyone with God. One after another, "retired officials, honorary persons in the city" come, surrounded by their families, in order to congratulate the family of the mayor. In the midst of congratulations, when the mayor with Anna Andreevna, among the guests languishing with envy, consider themselves a general's couple, the postmaster runs in with the message that "the official whom we took for the auditor was not the auditor." Khlestakov's printed letter to Tryapichkin is read aloud and in turn, since every new reader, having reached the characteristics of his own person, goes blind, slips and moves away. The crushed mayor delivers a diatribe not so much to the helipad Khlestakov, as to the “clicker, paper marak”, which he will certainly insert into a comedy. General anger is directed at Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky, who started a false rumor when the sudden appearance of a gendarme announcing that “an official who arrived by personal order from St. The silent scene lasts more than a minute, during which time no one changes his position. "The curtain falls."

retold

The name of this writer has gone down in history forever. And not in vain. He, Nikolaev Vasilievich created many works.

All of them are saturated with his sparkling humor and filled with a variety of characters. His works are studied in schools and universities. Based on their motives, films are made both here and abroad. It is difficult to say offhand how many works this great writer created. And all his works went down in history as masterpieces of world literature. We will now consider one of the works of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol. It's called "Inspector". The first time I saw him was in a movie, I mean in a TV show. I remember. that Andrey Mironov was in the title role and the play struck me, but then, when I read the book itself, I realized that it simply could not be otherwise. The director of the film simply had no right to shoot badly. But back to the great writer.

2) Summary of the play "The Inspector General".

First, I would like to clarify what exactly is required summary. I remember my studies at school, especially in the spring, there was no time for lessons at all, because you run around all day on the street. But the study still went on. And the lesson has not been learned. In high school, I remember that textbooks wrote a summary of this or that work, and right in the lesson you quickly read it and look, you will reach the "C grade". There were of course incidents, but mostly got away with it. Okay, let's get down to business.

Action one.

A small provincial town in which there is a Mayor and other officials. - "- The mayor informs his officials that an auditor is going to the city to them. He goes secretly. Based on this, the mayor sets tasks: for the postmaster, to open letters and read them in order to to have information. The rest is to put all your affairs in order. Two officials with the names Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky report that a certain Khlestakov has settled in the hotel, who may well be this auditor. This Khlestakov arrived in the city about eight days ago, he does not pay for the room and food , buys everything on credit. The mayor goes to the hotel to pretend that he is a kind of guardian of the travelers. At the same time, the wife and daughter of the mayor send the maid for reconnaissance, to the hotel, to find out who this Khlestakov is. Before leaving, the mayor sets the task to their quarterly, to sweep the main street, and put some kind of poles, even if made of straw, in place of the demolished old fence. andarma.

Action two.

Unfolds in a hotel room. There Osip, the servant of Khlestakov, and himself. Osip grumbles under the breath of the accusation against Khlestakov, who lost all his money in cards. Khlestakov argues aloud that he would sell clothes, but he is going to his father's estate and must arrive in proper form. At this time, the mayor appears with a question whether the residents have any complaints. (Such a trick with his sides). Khlestakov recalls how some infantry captain robbed him in Penza, which is why he is dissatisfied with the city and people. Khlestakov is outraged that in this city he is not given a loan. And he receives this loan from the Governor, and not the 200 requested rubles, but twice as much. And although the "auditor" now has money, he decides not to pay the hotel debt yet, he will pay, they say, later. The mayor sends a note to his wife. And one more note to the chairman of charitable institutions, Strawberry.

Action three.

The wife and daughter of the Governor receive a note from him in which he informs them that a high-ranking official will be visiting the city. Osip appears, who brought Khlestakov's suitcase. Khlestakov, having inspected the city and having a hearty lunch, having consumed a fair amount of alcohol, begins to paint the ladies and everyone else what he is like. influential person. What is there, in St. Petersburg, he and Pushkin on a short leg, and in general, a grip. And the emperor knows him personally and consults with him. In general, the man broke up in earnest. With his story, he frightens the owners of the house even more, he doesn’t even scare him, but makes him panic. - The mayor says into his nose.,_But if at least half of this is true, then what?

Action four.

Lyapkin-Tyapkin enters the case. He lines up the officials in order to file complaints and petitions with the auditor. At the same time, the nobility is trying to bribe the auditor. But the auditor is very "honest" and takes money traditionally "on loan". At the same time, each of the nobles asks Khlestakov to put in a good word for them before the sovereign. Here only the main character realizes that he is clearly being confused with someone. And without putting it off, he writes about these events to his friend Tryapichkin, the St. Petersburg correspondent, so that he writes about everything in the newspaper. Servant Osip hints to Khlestakov that it would not hurt them to leave, otherwise a real auditor will arrive "then you won't be in trouble. They leave, but not immediately, before that, the so-called auditor flirts with might and main with the mother and daughter of the Governor, who accept his courtship, up to rivalry. And continues to receive visitors with a petition, including a delegation of merchants from complaining about the Mayor, who does not allow them to work normally .. Then, nevertheless, he leaves the city.

Action five.

The mayor's wife and daughter dream that they will move to live in St. Petersburg when the mayor is given a promotion, because now they have such connections. The mayor wants to deal with the merchants, who complained about him to the auditor. Mentally, he is set to move to the city and accepts congratulations from his subordinates on this occasion. The complete triumph of the mayor, but then the postmaster appears, with a letter from Khlestakov to Tryapichkin. The letter is read aloud, and it contains such caustic descriptions of all those present that even burn with shame. It was only after reading the letter that it dawned on all those present that no Khlestakov was an auditor, neither outwardly nor in age, he was not up to the auditor. It begins to find out who was the first to start a rumor that Khlestakov was an auditor. These are the same notorious Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky. And at this moment, a gendarme enters the room and announces the arrival of a real auditor, who demands a mayor. Even according to the report, it is felt that a real auditor will not even take bribes on loan, as well as flirt with the wife and daughter of the Governor. A colorful silent scene follows.

Our mother Russia is unchanging. That's how many years have passed since the writing of the play "The Government Inspector", and yet nothing has changed. Also, officials take bribes, and such auditors often appear in society. I can cite as an example a case that happened recently in my city. Also, like Gogol's auditor, one day a certain man appeared, sort of like from Moscow.

But he did not roam around the mayors, he beat at least high-ranking people. I used the sauna for a week without paying a penny, borrowed money from taxi drivers, dined in expensive restaurants without paying once. And then he disappeared into the vastness of his native country. And the rest of the people could only guess what it was.

Mayor's house room

Phenomenon 1

To all the assembled officials, the mayor informs the unpleasant news that an auditor is coming to their city, moreover, incognito. For all officials, the visit of the auditor is extremely unpleasant. Judge Lyapkin-Tyapkin assumes that Russia wants to wage war, so the auditor is sent to find out if there is treason anywhere.

The mayor Anton Antonovich is very ironic about this assumption: their county town is not at all a border town, from it "at least three years of galloping, you will not reach any state." He advises to restore the appearance of order everywhere.

So, in charitable institutions, in a hospital, for example, clean caps can be put on the sick so that they do not, as usual, look like blacksmiths. It would be better if there were fewer patients at all.

Artemy Filippovich agrees with such measures. He says that his and Dr. Gibner’s principle of healing is “the closer to nature, the better,” because “a simple person: if he dies, then he will die anyway, if he recovers, then he will recover,” so they do not use expensive drugs.

He advises the judge to pay attention to the official places: there the watchman brought geese with small caterpillars, and the judge himself hung a hunting rapnik. The mayor will not talk about “internal orders”: after all, it is so arranged by God himself> he explains that every person has sins.

The judge objects: there are different sins for sins. Here he, for example, openly says that he takes bribes, but these are bribes by greyhound puppies. Ammos Fedorovich and Anton Antonovich are trying to prove to each other that each of them is less sinful.

As for the schools, the mayor suggests to Luka Lukich that he make sure that the teacher does not make faces at distinguished visitors and break chairs when he talks about Alexander the Great.

Phenomenon 2

The postmaster fears that the arrival of the auditor portends a war with the Turks. Anton Antonovich says that this is not for the Turks, but it will be bad for them. He asks the postmaster to check every letter that comes in the mail. The postmaster readily agrees: for him, reading other people's letters is a common practice.

Phenomenon 3

Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky, out of breath, enter and say that the inspector has already arrived: this is Ivan Aleksandrovich Khlestakov, he is traveling from St. Petersburg to the Saratov province, he stopped at the tavern, where he lives for the second week. He does not pay money to the owner and looks at everything very carefully.

The mayor is horrified: the city is dirty, the prisoners are not given provisions, in these two weeks a non-commissioned officer's widow has been whipped! He sends officials to deal with departments, and he himself is going to pay a visit to a visiting auditor.

Phenomenon 4

Anton Antonovich orders the quarterly to sweep the streets clean for tenths, and blames him for taking “out of order”: for example, the merchant Chernyaev gave him two arshins of cloth for his uniform, and he pulled off the whole thing.

Phenomenon 5

The mayor gives the order to demolish the old fence and answer questions about the church that it was not plundered in parts at all, but burned down. The mayor says that he is sinful in many ways, and asks God to "get away with it as soon as possible." Then he will put a candle, which no one has put yet: three poods of wax will be torn off from each merchant.

The mayor rides with Dobchinsky. Bobchinkiy does not fit on the droshky, but he is going to run after the droshky with a “cockerel”.

Phenomenon 6

The mayor's wife and daughter are burning with curiosity: what is the auditor? Anna Andreevna wants to find out everything herself.

Action two
hotel room

Phenomenon 1

Osip lies on the master's bed and talks to himself. From his monologue it becomes clear that he and the master left Petersburg two months ago, that the master “finished” all his money, and now he “sits and twisted his tail.”

Phenomenon 2

Master Osip always demands the best dinner. In St. Petersburg, as soon as he received money from his father, he immediately went on a spree - he rode a cab, went to theaters.

Phenomenon 3

Khlestakov sends his servant for dinner to the owner, but he refuses to go, since they have not paid for three weeks.

Phenomenon 4

Khlestakov speaks to the tavern servant in an ingratiating tone and asks him to persuade the owner to send him dinner, promising to pay later.

Phenomenon 5

Khlestakov dreams of how he will slay the provincial landowners with Petersburg manners. It would be nice to roll up "a kind of devil" in a carriage to a neighbor-landowner, dress Osip in a livery ...

Phenomenon 6

The tavern servant brings Khlestakov lunch. He is dissatisfied: there is no fish, no meatballs (he saw how two short men ate it all), but he eats everything.

Phenomenon 7

Osip tells Khlestakov that the mayor has arrived and wants to meet him. Khlestakov is confused.

Phenomenon 8

Khlestakov and Anton Antonovich begin to justify themselves to each other. Khlestakov promises that he will pay for the hotel, scolds the owner, who serves him bad food.

The mayor offers to move to another apartment, Khlestakov refuses: he thinks that we are talking about a prison. He threatens to complain to the minister.

The mayor asks for mercy, because he has "a wife, small children." His salary is not even enough for tea and sugar, and bribes, if any, are minimal, and the fact that a non-commissioned officer's widow was carved was invented by his enemies.

Khlestakov asks Anton Antonovich for a loan of two hundred rubles. The mayor gives him four hundred and offers to live with him.

Khlestakov finally stops worrying and thinks that he is so warmly received. The mayor is sure that Khlestakov wants to be considered "incognito", therefore he is lying that he is going to his father in the village.

Phenomenon 9

A tavern servant comes with a bill, the mayor kicks him out, promising to send money.

Event 10

Phenomenon 5

Khlestakov is treated to breakfast at the hospital. He asks the mayor about card establishments, but he replies that there are none in the city.

Phenomenon 6

Anton Antonovich brings the guest home. Khlestakov, who drank at breakfast, talks about his life in St. Petersburg. He hopes his listeners won't think he's just "rewriting".

He only enters the department for a few minutes to give instructions, and there "an official for writing, a kind of rat, only with a pen - tr, tr ... went to write."

At some point, Khlestakov forgets and says how he flies to his fourth floor, throws his overcoat to Mavrushka ... But he immediately corrects himself: he forgot that he lives in the mezzanine. He has the richest and most famous house in St. Petersburg, soup in a saucepan is brought to him from Paris by steamer.

He, Khlestakov, is on a friendly footing with Pushkin, and he composes at his leisure, gives chic balls and dinners, manages the department, often visits the palace, he will soon be made a field marshal.

Phenomenon 7

Officials are shaking with fear. The mayor invites the guest to rest. Officials are sure that if at least half of what Khlestakov said is true, then they have something to fear.

Phenomenon 8

The mayor's wife and daughter are discussing Khlestakov. Each of them is sure that it was she who liked the guest.

Phenomenon 9

Khlestakov asks which ladies he likes best - blondes or brunettes. Khlopov replies that he cannot know. Khlestakov, like everyone else, takes money from him.

Strawberry appears and reminds Khlestakov that he was treated to his place. Khlestakov thanks Strawberry for yesterday's breakfast. He informs the "auditor" on the rest of the officials. He is not going to give money. But the hero asks for a loan, and he gives.

Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky come to Khlestakov. He demands money from them. Dobchinsky asks St. Petersburg to work to have his son recognized as legitimate, and Bobchinsky asks at least to tell the sovereign about his existence.

Act Five
Room in the mayor's house about

Phenomenon 1

Anton Antonovich asks Anna Andreevna where they will live now - here or in St. Petersburg. Of course, in St. Petersburg, the wife answers, how can you stay here! The mayor sees himself as a general. Anna Andreevna presents her future home in the capital.

Anton Antonovich arranges a reception and tells the guests about moving to the capital and the possible receipt of a general's rank. Officials are asked not to forget them and, if possible, provide patronage. The mayor graciously agrees.

Phenomenon 8

The postmaster appears and reads aloud Khlestakov's opened letter to Tryapichkin, from which it becomes clear that he is not an auditor.

The mayor is shocked. The letter says about each of the officials. Khlestakov wrote about the mayor that he was "stupid as a gray gelding", about Strawberry - that he was "a pig in a yarmulke."

Luka Lukich is “rotten through and through with onions”, the judge is “very bad manners”, the postmaster “drinks bitter”. The mayor scolds himself. Officials are looking for the culprit in the incident and decide that it is Bobchineky and Dobchinsky, who spread the rumor about Khlestakov.

Act one

Events take place in one of the rooms in the mayor's house.

Phenomenon 1

Officials, having heard the "most unpleasant" news that an auditor would soon come to their city, were seriously excited. They were not ready for the visit of such an important guest. Presumably, the auditor will arrive incognito, not indicating his presence in any way. Versions about the true reason for his arrival were put forward the most unexpected. To the point of ridiculous assumptions. Ammos Fedorovich put forward a version about the imminent start of the war and perhaps the auditor is interested in whether there are traitors in the city or not. The mayor immediately cut off this version. This city is not of the scale to be interested in it from a political point of view. Urgently, the mayor demands to put things in order, creating the appearance that they have everything in full openwork. First, go to the hospitals. Dress patients in clean clothes. Put up a sign with the name of each patient. Ventilate the room from tobacco smoke walking along the hospital corridors. More or less healthy prepare for discharge. To get rid of the geese, which the watchmen were engaged in breeding, by choosing government places for this, which is unacceptable by law. Deal with the assessor, from whom a mile away reeks of the suffocating smell of fumes. Be sure to look into educational establishments, where teachers have a very weird look. The idiotic facial expression is akin to their actions, in no way associated with their academic titles.

Phenomenon 2

The meeting was interrupted by the arrival of the postmaster. The news of the arrival of the auditor did not bypass him. His version of the arrival of an uninvited guest agreed with the version of Ammos Fedorovich. It came down to the imminent start of the war. The mayor suggested that the auditor could have been sent as a result of a denunciation. He casually asks the postmaster whether it is possible to carefully, without arousing suspicion, open all incoming correspondence to familiarize himself with its contents. The postmaster agrees to his proposal, clearly making it clear that he has been practicing this for a long time, for the sake of curiosity. Sometimes there are very interesting letters that definitely deserve attention. He has not yet met a denunciation among them.

Phenomenon 3

The first to see the expected auditor were Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky. Soaring like horses after a long race, they flew to the mayor with the news that they had seen this gentleman in one of the hotels. The inspector looks to be about 25 years old. The guy lives there for the second week. His behavior is very strange. Tries to eat and drink for free. The guest does not pay money, is not going to move out. He must be the auditor. Brash and unpredictable. This news excited the mayor in earnest. And without an auditor, there are enough problems. You have to check everything in person. Having called the bailiff, he decides to go to the hotel and make sure on the spot whether it is really the auditor or the landowners who got it wrong. The officials go about their business.

Phenomenon 4

The mayor is left alone. He gives the order to be given a sword and a horse-drawn carriage. Putting a new hat on his head, he leaves the house. Next comes Bobchinsky. The landowner burns with the desire to see the inspector once more, even through a crack in the door, even with one eye. The quarterly receives the task to put in order the street leading to the tavern. It must be swept away so that not a single speck remains. Tens were allocated to help.

Phenomenon 5

While waiting for the wagon, the mayor did not sit back. As soon as a private bailiff appeared on the threshold, a pile of tasks immediately fell on him, which must be completed as quickly as possible. Most of them were on the topic of improving the city: break the fence, creating the appearance that the work is in full swing, put a high quarter, and when asked why there is no church in the city, answer that there was, but it burned down. Forbid soldiers in a half-naked form to roam the streets.

Phenomenon 6

Anna Andreevna and Maria Antonovna flew into the house in the hope of finding their father, but he was already gone. Ladies quarrel among themselves. The mayor's wife sends her daughter after the wagon to collect more information about the auditor. In particular, she asked to pay attention to his eyes and mustache. Immediately after that, immediately return home.

Action two

Events take place in one of the rooms in the hotel

Phenomenon 1

The inspector turned out to be not an inspector at all, but Ivan Alexandrovich Khlestakov. Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky mistook him for him. Bewitch and hang. amateur card games. In the next game, who lost all the money. There is nothing to return home. Osip, Khlestakov's servant is angry with the master. Hungry and angry that because of him you have to beg, looking for leftovers on the plates after the masters. He got the owner. He doesn’t know how to do anything, only to burn through his father’s money. Although he liked Petersburg. Life was in full swing there, not like in the Saratov province.

Phenomenon 2

Osip receives a scolding from Khlestakov, who saw that he was again lying on the master's bed. It's not good for servants to behave like this. He chases Osip out for dinner. Stomach cramps with hunger. Osip refused, saying that the owner of the inn was tired of feeding them on credit. There will be money, then there will be food. Khlestakov requires an innkeeper.

Phenomenon 3

Khlestakov was left alone and indulged in reflection. What a strange city. They don't even lend. Now what, starve to death? And the infantry captain is to blame for everything. He cleaned it to the skin, not leaving a single penny. This time, fortune turned away from him, but if fate gives him a chance to play a game with the captain again, he will not refuse. Maybe next time you'll have better luck.

Phenomenon 4

Osip managed to persuade the tavern servant to go up with him to the owner's room. Khlestakov fawned over him. There is some hunting. You have to pretend to be a sycophant. The servant remained unmoved. They have accumulated a whole bunch of debts. The owner categorically refuses to feed them on credit. If it goes on like this, he promised to inform the mayor about everything and with his help to evict the guests to the street. Khlestakov again sends Osip to the owner, in the hope that he will change his anger to mercy.

Phenomenon 5

Everybody left. Khlestakov, left alone, again began to think. I started to feel sick from hunger. To distract himself from spasmodic attacks in the stomach, Khlestakov suddenly imagined himself as a rich man driving a carriage. He mentally dressed Osip in livery, and a picture flashed before his eyes of how they travel to the best houses in St. Petersburg and are welcome everywhere.

Phenomenon 6

Dreams Come True. Osip succeeded in persuading the host about dinner. There were two dishes on the tray. The type of food left much to be desired, but you don't have to choose. Hunger is not an aunt. Having eaten everything to the last crumb, Khlestakov was still dissatisfied. The servant said it was last time. No one else will do charity work. The owner was too lenient with them anyway.

Phenomenon 7

Osip flew into the room with a dumbfounded look. The master wants to see the mayor. Khlestakov is in a panic. Could the innkeeper have snitched on him? What will happen now? Is it really impossible to avoid prison and he is destined to spend the next ten years behind bars.

Phenomenon 8

The mayor in the company of Dobchinsky enters Khlestakov's room. Khlestakov, who decided that he would now be taken to prison, yelled with all his might that he would complain to the minister. The mayor understood his statement in his own way. He decided that the inspector was not happy with the way he was running the city. Khlestakov makes it clear that he would have left St. Petersburg long ago, but they have no money. The mayor took his phrase as a hint of a bribe and slipped several hundred into his pocket. Khlestakov was surprised, but he was even more struck by the proposal of the mayor to pay a visit to his family. Like, the wife and daughter will be unspeakably happy with the visit of such a dear guest. Khlestakov does not understand the meaning of what is happening. Instead of the alleged prison, such honors, why all of a sudden, but accepts the offer to stay. It looks like his fantasies are starting to come true. Feeling superior to the mayor, Khlestakov's attitude towards him is changing before our eyes.

Phenomenon 9

The tavern servant, at the request of Osip, again went up to Khlestakov's room. Khlestakov intends to pay off the bills with the owner, but the mayor did not let him do this. He orders him to leave the premises along with the bill presented. He promised to send money later.

Event 10

Khlestakov accepted the proposal of the mayor to ride through the city institutions with joy. It was necessary to delay the time and give the wife and daughter the opportunity to have time to prepare the house for the arrival of the guest. A note was sent to them announcing the imminent visit of the auditor. Prisons did not attract Khlestakov's attention. But charitable institutions were a joy. Strawberry was warned in advance. It was he who was responsible for them in the city. Osip receives an order to deliver the owner's belongings to the mayor's house.

Act Three

Room in the mayor's house

Phenomenon 1

The mayor's wife and daughter are looking forward to hearing about the auditor. Standing at the window, the ladies indulge in thoughts about his arrival in the city. Finally, Dobchinsky appears. He's probably aware of everything that's going on. Women rush to meet him with questions.

Phenomenon 2

Dobchinsky gives the women a note from the mayor, which reported on the visit to their house of an imaginary auditor. Dobchinsky emphasizes the importance of the moment. It was he and Bobchinsky who became the first who managed to figure out the real auditor.

Phenomenon 3

As soon as the ladies heard about the visit of the auditor, each rushed to her wardrobe in search of the best dress. I didn't want to lose face in front of an important guest. You have to present yourself at its best. Mother and daughter, as if two rivals, arranged a competition among themselves, which of them has the best taste in choosing clothes.

Phenomenon 4

Osip, loaded with suitcases with the master's junk, crosses the threshold of the mayor's house. Hungry as hell, he immediately declares that he wants to eat. Anna Andreevna informs him that they didn’t prepare the food on purpose, they didn’t have time yet. The auditor's servant must not eat simple food. If he intends to wait, then the table will soon be set. Osip does not intend to wait and agrees to any food.

Phenomenon 5

The mayor, Khlestakov and other officials enter the house after a tedious tour of various establishments. Khlestakov is pleased with how he was received. First of all, he is interested in where they can play cards. The mayor sees a catch in the question. He tells Khlestakov that he never held a deck in his hands, but meanwhile a week earlier he had beaten an official, emptying his pocket for a hundred rubles.

Phenomenon 6

Khlestakov meets the mayor's wife and daughter. Spreading his tail in front of them like a peacock, he tells jokes to women, tells stories from St. Petersburg life. It got to the point that Khlestakov attributed to himself the authorship of many famous works. The mayor's daughter corrected him, pointing out the mistake, but instead of praise for erudition and attentiveness, she received a push in the side from her mother. Everyone present listened to him with their mouths open. The day was busy. Khlestakov, tired of his own chatter, decided to rest a bit. The guests remained at the table.

Phenomenon 7

Khlestakov went to bed. The guests began to discuss Khlestakov. During the discussion, everyone unanimously came to the conclusion that he is a very important person. Strawberry had a bad feeling after he left. It seemed to him that the inspector would definitely report everything that was happening to St. Petersburg.

Phenomenon 8

The mayor's wife and daughter were worried about a purely womanish question, which of them attracted the auditor more and which of them he looked at more often that evening.

Phenomenon 9

The mayor was clearly agitated. In vain he was frank with the guest. For if he is true, important bird, then now he, the mayor, is unhappy. On the other hand, it is not clear when he managed to become so important, because he is still too young. Something is not clean here.

Event 10

While Khlestakov was sleeping, the mayor and his wife decided to learn more about him from his servant. They bombarded Osip with questions. Osip is not stupid. He immediately realized that the master was mistaken for another person, but he did not show it. On the contrary, he began to praise the master from all sides, making it clear that he was in fact an important person. In gratitude for his assistance, he was given some money. In order not to disturb the peace of the auditor, the mayor ordered that no one be allowed into the house unnecessarily.

act four

Phenomenon 1

After consulting among themselves, the officials came to the conclusion that the only right decision will give the auditor a bribe. However, no one was willing to do so. Everyone was afraid of falling under the law. In order to be honest with each other, the officials decided to enter the room one at a time and conduct a conversation each on their own behalf.

Phenomenon 2

Khlestakov, in excellent spirits, leaves the room after a sound sleep and a hearty dinner. This is the kind of life he likes. Everywhere he is welcome, everyone walks on tiptoe in front of him. The mayor's daughter is not bad-looking and clearly made it clear that she liked him. If you hit her, then in the city it will be possible to linger, combining business with pleasure.

Phenomenon 3

Not everyone can give a bribe. It was clear that the officials did not like this idea. There was a long queue of them. The first was Judge Tyapkin-Lyapkin. The judge clutched the money convulsively in his fist. He was visibly nervous. His fist clenched in excitement. Money falls on the floor. Khlestakov guy is not a miss. Got the situation straight away. Seeing the banknotes that have fallen out, he asks the judge to lend him money. Lyapkin-Tyapkin was glad to get rid of the money. Allegedly having loaned money to Khlestakov, he hurries to leave the room as soon as possible.

Phenomenon 4

The postmaster was second in line. Khlestakov immediately told him that he needed money. The amount of the debt was 300 rubles.

Phenomenon 5

The superintendent of the schools, Khlopov, did not skimp. The amount of 300 rubles again replenished Khlestakov's pocket.

Phenomenon 6

Strawberry surprised with his generosity, lending the auditor 400 rubles.

Phenomenon 7

Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky turned out to be the most greedy for money. The amount of 65 rubles in half was handed over to Khlestakov, gritting his teeth.

Phenomenon 8

Phenomenon 9

Osip offers Khlestakov to run away until the truth comes out. Khlestakov agrees. Before leaving, he asks Osip to take the letter to the post office addressed to Tryapichkin. Outside the window, the merchants made a noise, deciding to pay a visit to the auditor. The quarter tried to detain them, but Khlestakov gave the order to let everyone into the house.

Event 10

The merchants were generous with gifts. All of them were brought by a complaint against the mayor. They asked Khlestakov to put in a good word for them in the capital on occasion. Khlestakov promises to take action. He does not refuse money offered by merchants.

Event 11

We were surprised by the visit of a locksmith and non-commissioned officer. They also came with a complaint against the mayor. One of them had her husband illegally taken away to serve, and the second was flogged in front of the people. The crowd at the gate did not get smaller. Osip urged the master to get out of here as quickly as possible. Khlestakov orders no one else to enter him.

Event 12

At the sight of the mayor's daughter, Khlestakov fell to his knees, openly declaring that he was madly in love with her. Marya Antonovna did not expect such a turn, but in her heart she is insanely happy.

Phenomenon 13

Anna Andreevna, seeing Khlestakov on her knees in front of her daughter, beside herself with rage, drives Marya Antonovna away. The girl runs away in tears. Khlestakov turns his attention to the mayor's wife, assuring her of his feelings towards her.

Event 14

Marya Antonovna, returning, sees Khlestakov kneeling in front of her mother. Realizing that he was in an awkward position, Khlestakov figured out how to get out of it on the go. He grabs Marya by the hand and asks the girl's mother to bless their union.

Event 15

The mayor, having learned about the purpose of the merchants' visit to his house, convinces Khlestakov that they are slandering him. Anna Andreevna, interrupting her husband, dumbfounds him with the news of the imminent wedding of the auditor and Maria.

Event 16

Osip reports that the horses are ready. It's time to get on the road. Khlestakov explained to the mayor the purpose of his departure by his desire to visit his uncle, promising to return in a day. Having kissed Marya's hand in parting and intercepting money from the mayor for the journey, Khlestakov, together with Osip, leave in a hurry.

Act Five

Phenomenon 1

The Gorodnichiy family is in seventh heaven with happiness. Lucky for their daughter to grab such a groom. Now their dreams will come true. Anna Petrovna will build a huge house in the capital, and the mayor will receive general's shoulder straps.

Phenomenon 2

The mayor scolds the merchants for complaining about him to Khlestakov. They still do not know the main thing, that the auditor will soon become his son-in-law. Then he will remember them all. The merchants felt awkward, like naughty kittens. One way to earn forgiveness is to make expensive wedding gifts. Merchants, bowing their heads, go home.

Phenomenon 3

Phenomenon 4

The next with their congratulations were Lyulyukov and Korobkin with his wife. The text of congratulations did not differ much from the previous ones.

Phenomenon 5

Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky rushed to hug and kiss Anna Andreevna and Marya Antonovna. Interrupting each other, they began to pour compliments and wishes to the ladies for a long and happy life filled with luxury and wealth.

Phenomenon 6

Luka Lukich and his wife seemed sincere in their joy for such a successful game for Marya Antonovna. The wife of Luka Lukich already shed a tear from the emotions that flooded over her. The mayor calls Mishka to bring more chairs for the guests. Everyone is asked to sit down.

Phenomenon 7

The guests began to ask questions about where the auditor had gone and why he was not present now at such an important moment. The mayor reports that the auditor went to his uncle, but promised to return a day later. Anna Andreevna informs everyone about the imminent move to St. Petersburg. Officials ask the mayor to put in a good word about their children. The mayor makes a promise that he will definitely help in any way he can. Anna Andreevna advises her husband to keep his mouth shut ahead of time.

Phenomenon 8

During the congratulations from the guests on the upcoming wedding, the postmaster appeared in front of the mayor. He shows the mayor an envelope with a letter, which reported that the auditor was not the one for whom he was taken. Having opened a letter addressed to a journalist at the post office, the postmaster learned a lot of interesting things about himself and everyone else. The mayor at first does not believe in what is happening. Then he goes berserk. As the letter was read, the mayor blushed more and more. Especially when it came to his family, where Khlestakov confesses to a journalist how he began to go after Anna Andreevna and Marya Antonovna, not knowing which one to choose. How did they let themselves be held around their fingers like that. It would be useless to catch this insolent and beat him up well, but it was useless to catch up with Khlestakov. They themselves gave him the fastest horses. It remains only to blame yourself. Dobchinsky and Bobchinsky got the most. After all, it was they who confused everyone, mistaking an ordinary visitor for an auditor.

The last phenomenon

The gendarme informs the mayor that a real auditor has arrived and demands to immediately invite him to his room. From what they heard, everyone was numb, frozen in various poses.
