Oge for English assignments. Demo versions of the exam in English

Changes in the 2018 exam paper compared to 2017.

There are no changes in the structure and content of the CMM. However, in 2018, clarifications were made to the evaluation criteria for task 33 “Personal Letter”.

Passing the OGE foreign languages involves the mandatory participation of students in completing written tasks, as well as tasks in the “Speaking” section.

The procedure does not provide for students’ refusal to participate in the OGE in foreign languages (section “Speaking”).

In order to optimize the time spent in the PPE for participants in the OGE in foreign languages, the OIV decides to choose one of the schemes for organizing the exam for all participants in the OGE in foreign languages:

Conducting an exam in foreign languages (simultaneously a written part and an oral part (section “Speaking”) on one of the days provided for by the schedule;

Conducting an exam in foreign languages (simultaneously the written part and the oral part of the “Speaking” section) on two days as provided for in the schedule;

Conducting the written part of the exam on one day, and the oral part (section “Speaking”) on another day, provided for by the schedule.

Today it is hard to imagine Moscow being dark at night. Yet, the central streets of the city became bright only in 1730. Before then, Muscovites had to keep candles burning in the windows for passers-by. Most people also carried individual oil lamps when they walked late. During the summer months, candles and oil lamps were not allowed because of the risk of fire. Later, gas lanterns appeared. They were rather effective but the real progress started later, with electric lamps. 448 electric lamps were fixed in the center of Moscow a century ago. At present, Moscow has a modern system of street lights with electronic control.

Student: As a matter of fact, we have four main holidays. They are Summer, Autumn or Fall, Winter and Spring holidays.

Electronic assistant: What holiday is your favorite? Why?
Student: Actually, I like summer holidays most of all. First of all, they are longer than others, almost three months. I love the summer heat a lot. So, it makes the holidays even more pleasant.

Electronic assistant: How much time on average do you spend online a day when you are on holiday?
Student: I guess that it’s the same amount of time that I usually spend, around 2 hours daily.

Electronic assistant: What would you recommend to a teenager who feels bored during the holidays?
Student:Personally, I would recommend to a bored teen going to watch a movie. It really helps. He can also start doing something that he never had time for. Last summer I started doing sport, weightlifting. The holidays were a great opportunity for it.

Electronic assistant: What do you usually do during your holidays?

Student: Usually, I do many things on my holidays. I have my workout every day. I have some quality time with my friends. I read different books, go rollerblading and bicycling. I also travel. Every summer my parents take me to some new places.

Electronic assistant: This is the end of the survey. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

I think that Russians study English at school because English is the international language.

If you speak English you can talk to people from different countries. Most international companies do their daily business using English.Nowadays, there are many international students exchange programs which allow Russians to learn different subjects abroad.

Personally, I use English in my travels.

When our family goes abroad for vacation we speak English with the locals.Also , I like watching English movies in English. Sometimes Russian translations are not very good.I like to listen to the original actors" voices. Of course, I correspond with my Spanish friends regularly in English.They don’t speak Russian, so English is the only language that we all can use.

That's all I wanted to say.

OGE in a foreign language is one of the selective exams for ninth-graders. Many graduates choose an exam in this subject. high school, because the prospect of getting into a specialized linguistic class is quite tempting. Well, the future associated with the use of a foreign language as a professional tool provides a chance to ensure good earnings and a decent standard of living.

Among all the foreign languages studied by modern schoolchildren, English holds the palm. This is not surprising, since it is recognized as the language of international business and diplomatic communication. Practice shows that passing the OGE in this subject is not so easy - for a good grade, it is not enough to memorize the basic rules and language norms.

In addition to passing the written exam, students in 2018 will demonstrate their listening skills as well as their ability to speak English. In addition to preparing on your own and working with a tutor, you should also study the features and structure of the ticket, understand how points will be awarded, and also find out what innovations may await you in the 2018 KIMs!

Demo version of OGE-2018

Dates of the OGE in English

Rosobrnadzor has already announced the approximate OGE schedule for 2018. Schoolchildren will take a foreign language (including English) on the following dates:

  • Early delivery of a foreign language is scheduled for April 28 (Saturday). The reserve day will be April 30, 2018 (Tuesday);
  • The main OGE will take place on May 25 (Friday). The reserve day for the main OGE will be June 20, 2018 (Wednesday);
  • The additional day for passing a foreign language will be September 14 (Friday). Booked September 21, 2018 (Friday) as a reserve.

Changes in the OGE in English

In 2018, English language tickets were not subject to changes in terms of structure and content. The subject commission reports that the only innovation was a change in the criteria by which task number 33 (writing a personal letter) will be assessed.

What is included in the KIM OGE in English?

The main purpose of the exam is to test the ability of ninth-graders to communicate in English. The commission will test your skills in understanding spoken language, speaking, reading and writing in English. It is the OGE that will determine whether the student is ready to study in high school, and will also identify students who can be recommended for grades 10-11 with a linguistic focus. The ticket structure can be divided into two parts:

  • written part – sections of the ticket from the first to the fourth. Students will demonstrate their ability to perceive speech by ear (listening), as well as demonstrate their reading skills in English, the ability to write and use lexical and grammatical skills. The maximum points that can be scored for this part of the CMM is 55;
  • oral part - consists of one section, which includes tasks from the speaking part. The maximum you can get for the verbal part of the ticket is 15 points.

Correct completion of all CMM tasks gives the opportunity to receive 70 points.

Speaking will require not only knowledge of the rules, but also the ability to maintain a dialogue

In most tasks (namely, thirty-two), the student will be able to give a short answer to the question posed by establishing correspondences for sets, choosing the correct answer from the list provided, filling in gaps in the text, or converting words into the correct lexical form. Tasks with a detailed answer include writing a personal letter, reading aloud a passage of a popular science text, conducting a dialogue with the teacher and a monologue on a given topic. The entire ticket can be structurally divided into the following parts:

  • listening - includes tasks based on phrases used in everyday communication, informational texts and advertisements. Each fragment lasts about one and a half to two minutes and is played twice. The complexity of the tasks is identical to the language level A2;
  • reading - tasks are based on texts of a pragmatic, popular science, journalistic and artistic nature. The volume of the fragment ranges from 220 to 600 words. The complexity of the tasks corresponds to the language level A2;
  • grammar and vocabulary - tasks that will test the depth of understanding of school material and the ability to operate with it;
  • personal letter – writing a text of at least 100-120 words. Letters containing less than 90 words will not be assessed according to other criteria - the student will immediately receive 0 points for the entire assignment. It is no less dangerous to write a letter that is too long - if it contains more than 132 words, the commission will check only the first 120 words in the work, and will ignore the rest;
  • speaking – tasks involving the use of several types of vocabulary. Be prepared for the fact that you will have to use social and everyday vocabulary (talk about leisure time, relationships with friends, hobbies, prominent cultural or scientific figures, environmental problems, etc.), as well as vocabulary from the educational and work sphere (dialogue is possible about choosing a future profession or the role of a foreign language in different areas of our lives).

Regulations and features of the exam

The student will have to complete the tasks from the first four sections in 120 minutes. In this case, the specialized commission recommends distributing time as follows:

  • 30 minutes – listening (section 1);
  • 30 minutes – for tasks testing reading skills (section 2);
  • 30 minutes – to identify skills in grammar and vocabulary (section 3);
  • 30 minutes to write a personal letter and test other written English skills (section 4).

15 minutes will be allotted for speaking.

Any textbooks and reference materials will have to be passed before the start of the OGE

Students are not allowed to bring additional materials and items to the OGE that are not related to the exam. You will only be allowed to take a pen with you. All other materials and equipment are provided by Rosobrnadzor - the classrooms will be equipped with technical means to ensure the playback of audio recordings, and the speaking classes will be equipped with computer equipment, programs for recording sound and microphones necessary to record the student’s answers.

How do raw scores translate into grades?

The exam scores will be transferred to the usual school grading system. The translation scale looks like this:

  • from 0 to 28 points – “unsatisfactory”;
  • from 29 to 45 points are translated into “satisfactory” and will allow you to receive a certificate;
  • from 46 to 58 points means that the student will receive “good”;
  • from 59 to 70 points are identical to the “excellent” rating.

When assigning students to specialized linguistic classes or entering specialized lyceums, students who score 56 points and above have priority.

Preparation for the OGE in English

Remember: none of the foreign languages, including English, can be passed right away! Only long-term and competent preparation for the OGE will give a chance to successfully pass this test. First, identify possible knowledge gaps - for this you need to download and work through demo versions of CMMs published by FIPI. Demo versions of tests, listening files and a requirements codifier can be found at the beginning of the article.

Do not forget that knowledge of the rules of the English language is absolutely useless if it is not supported by the ability to perceive speech by ear and speak a foreign language. To prepare for listening, regularly listen to audio books and English-language music, watch movies and television series with original dubbing (it’s better not to watch videos with subtitles - a line with words will distract your attention from listening to the speech of the characters).

Spend enough time preparing for the OGE - you should start in September

Speaking is another problem for 9th grade graduates. Vocabulary, grammar and writing usually bring students good points, but when conducting a dialogue or monologue, many are lost. To practice speaking, you should play everyday scenes in your head, conduct small dialogues with friends, sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers, and also describe in English the situations that just happened to you in the cinema, supermarkets and buses.

Don't forget that you may be asked to talk about a famous person. Watch a series of programs from the BBC or another popular science channel that talk about world-famous artists, writers and scientists, take notes on the main points, check the spelling, and then regularly read your text and listen to recordings of the programs.

Writing a personal letter in response to an incentive letter.

A student in the OGE in English is required to write a letter in response to a friend, based on the information presented in the assignment.

The time allotted to complete the task is 30 minutes.

The maximum score is 10 points.

TASK EXECUTION PLAN

In order to get a good score for the Writing section of the OGE in English, try following these tips:

  1. Maintain the genre

Fortunately, in the OGE (GIA) English there is only one format for a written assignment - a personal letter to a friend.

Imagine that you are communicating in person.

Try to ask questions to maintain the recipient’s interest, add details and express your personal attitude.

Words and expressions should be informal, as in real communication with your friends.

Informal writing also requires short forms:

it's instead of it is,

I've seen instead of I have seen

  1. It is important to adhere to the 100-120 word limit

Writing less than 90 words is not scored at all and you will receive 0 out of 10 marks for this part of the exam.

Part of the text of the letter exceeding 132 words is not assessed, in this case the probability of receiving 0 points is much less likely,

they will count 120 words from the beginning of your letter and check only those,

the grade will definitely be reduced for the structure of the letter,

because the required farewell and signature for a personal letter will not be included in the given volume.

  1. It is necessary to adhere to a clear structure of the letter

1 paragraph – address and date (in the upper right corner)

Paragraph 2 - address and greeting

Paragraph 3 – reaction to a friend’s information

Paragraph 4 – answer to 1 friend’s question

Paragraph 5 – answer to friend’s 2nd question

Paragraph 6 – answer to friend’s question 3

(or answers to all questions together in one paragraph)

Paragraph 7 – message about the desirability of receiving a response

8 paragraph – signature

answer them in monosyllables,

as well as ignoring your friend’s message.

To get the maximum score, each question should be answered in sufficient detail - about 2 sentences.

  1. You should show the examiner the variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures that you know.

synonyms, antonyms, words from the same language family

as many different grammatical structures as possible in a given volume.

Impress the tester with your knowledge of different tenses, complex sentences, degrees of comparison of adjectives and conditional moods.

  1. The letter should be logical and coherent

check the consistency and logic of the presentation of your thoughts

connect individual paragraphs using introductory words - well, by the way, you asked me about... etc.

  1. The letter must be lexically and grammatically correct

Try to write avoiding words and constructions that you are not sure of and check the final letter for typos and spelling errors.

Greetings, dear readers!

School life is gaining momentum, and many will have to make important decisions about taking certain subjects this school year. Some of my students chose English. I, of course, support them and am starting to publish a new section on the site, in which I will post materials from recommendations for successfully passing the OGE in English, samples of task completion, analysis of typical errors.

What do you need to know?

Tell me, how many of you know how to play golf? No? It's strange because it's clean English game. To be honest, I don’t know how either...

“But what does golf have to do with it?” - you ask. It's simple - to play this game (or any other), you need to know the rules.

Golf(English) golf) is a sports game in which individual participants or teams compete by driving a small ball into special holes using sticks, trying to cover the allotted distance in the minimum number of hits. In each game, the participant must complete a certain number of holes (usually 18) in a certain order.

In the same way, at the OGE you need to complete a certain number of tasks (usually 36), while making a minimum number of mistakes and within the allotted time.

Without knowing the exam format and types of tasks, even a strong student will find it difficult to cope with the task. As Radislav Petrovich Milrud said at one of the forums for teachers, “Testing with limited time is a special skill.”

What should a teacher do when preparing students for an exam?

Firstly, familiarize yourself with the regulatory documents on the FIPI website, and secondly, explain in an accessible form to your students what tasks they have to complete, how much time is allotted for each section and how to fill out the answer forms correctly.

What should a student do when preparing to take the OGE in English?

You can independently (on the same FIPI website) look at the tasks and recommendations for completing them in the demo version of the current year, and then go up to your school teacher and please him with your sudden decision to take the OGE in English! Be prepared for the fact that his reaction can be very unpredictable - from restrainedly positive to extremely negative, especially if you do not live in a big city, do not study in an English special school, and, in general, your art teacher teaches English.

What kind of nonsense did I write here, many of you will think. But in the vast expanses of our vast Motherland, this is not the case!

What to do? Study English, no matter what, I will answer you. And if you have reached these lines, it means you are in the right place and at the right time. So here we go!

Structure of the OGE (main state exam)

The examination paper consists of two parts:

  • written(sections 1–4), which includes tasks on listening, reading, writing, as well as tasks to control the lexical and grammatical skills of graduates
  • oral(section 5), which consists of 3 speaking tasks

In total you have to complete 36 tasks , which are divided into two levels of difficulty:

  • level 1 includes 19 tasks, maximum points – 34
  • level 2 includes 17 tasks, maximum points – 36

The total number of points for the entire work is 70

Scale for converting OGE points into grades

5 – 59 – 70 points

4 – 46 – 58 points

3 – 29 – 45 points

2 – 0 – 28 points

The results of your exam can be used for admission to specialized classes in high school. A guideline for selection into specialized classes can be the indicator lower limit which corresponds 56 points.

Duration of the OGE in foreign languages

The time for completing the first four sections of the examination paper, that is, the written part, is 120 minutes (2 hours).

section 1 (listening tasks) – 30 minutes;

Section 2 (reading assignments) – 30 minutes;

section 3 (tasks on grammar and vocabulary) – 30 minutes;

section 4 (writing task) – 30 minutes.

The oral response time is 15 minutes per responder.

Until today, the answer to the question “Is the oral part (speaking) held on the same day as the written part, or is the exam held over two days?” remains open for me. The guys who took the OGE in 2016 told me that the exam took place on one day (from 9:00 to 16:00). That is, each student waited his turn and entered the classroom at a certain time for him. On the forums of English teachers, I was given the following answer: “The exam is taken in two stages with an interval of 2 - 3 days for preparation,” which corresponds to the Order of the Ministry of Education Russian Federation dated January 26, 2016. According to the approved schedule, the OGE in English took place on May 28 and June 7.

Probably, this issue will be resolved locally in each individual school.

Additional materials and equipment

Each classroom for the written part of the OGE in foreign languages must be equipped with a technical means that ensures high-quality playback of audio recordings on compact discs (CD) for completing the tasks of Section 1 “Listening Tasks”. Auditoriums for conducting the oral part of the exam must be equipped with computers with pre-installed special software, as well as headsets with built-in microphones. To conduct the oral part of the exam, language laboratories with appropriate equipment can be used.

  • Make a decision as soon as possible (September) about taking the OGE in English
  • Familiarize yourself with the exam structure
  • Regularly complete tasks from an open bank of tasks posted on the FIPI website, including a demo version of the current year’s OGE
  • Purchase the textbooks and manuals you need to prepare for the exam.
  • Read updates on the site regularly smashtrash.ru
  • Find a good teacher who will help you prepare for the OGE
  • Learn to properly allocate time for completing each section of the exam
  • During preparation, DO NOT ignore new vocabulary, but try to learn as many new words as possible
  • Write a practice exam several times (preferably during the holidays) to see your approximate results and analyze your weaknesses
  • Be sure to print and learn how to fill out the exam forms

In the next article we will look in detail at the rules for filling out exam forms. I will also review recommended textbooks and guides for successfully passing the OGE.

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE TASKS IN THIS SECTION

A big mistake many students make when completing listening tasks is ignoring the tasks themselves before listening.

half the success here is working with tasks at the stage before listening to audio materials

  • Read carefully and “tune your ears” to the topic that will be discussed
  • Underline the key words in each question
  • Try to predict the answer or vocabulary you are about to hear

the second step on the path to good scores in this section of the OGE will be direct listening and completing the tasks

  • When listening, write down important words or make notes on a sheet of questions (both in Russian and in English)
  • Check your answers when listening again, so that it does not turn out that some important fact was missed due to inattention.
  • Do not leave blanks (questions without answers), since, firstly, there is always a chance to guess the correct option, but, more importantly, do not make mistakes when transferring them to the answer sheet (do not allow the answers to shift)
EXAMPLE OF COMPLETION OF TASK No. 2

Let's try the above tactics with an example.

One of the answer options (No. 2) for task 2:

We emphasize the key words:

The speaker talks about his/her after-class activity.

We make assumptions about what can be heard in a monologue about events held at the end of compulsory lessons - these could be:

  • sports sections, for example, in the following sports - football, basketball, volleyball...,
  • art circles, and then you expect to hear, for example, the verbs to draw - draw/paint, or to perform - act/perform...

Speaker D mentions the following extracurricular activities available at school: gym, swimming pool, volleyball, chemistry laboratory.

We have one 100% hit of our guess with what we heard - volleyball l, but even if it were not there, based on similar options - football, basketball, we would already be able to determine the correct answer.

    Task 9

    Read the texts and establish a correspondence between the texts and their headings: for each text indicated by the letters A–G, select the corresponding heading indicated by numbers. Use every number just once. The assignment contains one extra heading.

    1. The birthplace of the city
    2. Multifunctional construction
    3. The first traffic jams
    4. A perfect location
    5. Safety gates
    6. Defeating pollution
    7. Navigation season
    8. The royal birds

    A. Almost 2,000 years ago, the army of Ancient Rome landed on the coast of Britain and headed north. Soon they came to a wide, deep river. The army could neither walk across it nor find an alternative route. The only solution was building a bridge. The Romans found a place where the river was relatively narrow and built a bridge. Then they founded a settlement, which they called Londinium. Today it is known as London.

    B. The Romans soon discovered that Londinium was an ideal site for a port. Their bridge prevented large ships from going up the river, so all ships trading had to stop and unload at Londinium. It made Londinium an important trading center and stimulated the growth and development of the city.

    C. The first London bridge over the Thames was built of wood – and then rebuilt time and time again. Later, a stone bridge was constructed. By the 1350s there were nearly 200 houses and shops on top of the bridge, and the road across it was very narrow. It was very difficult for carriages, horses and people to move across the bridge. They often couldn’t pass one another and had to spend hours on the bridge.

    D. When the Thames flooded, it covered London with water. After a bad flood in 1953, people began to look for a way to control the river. In 1982 the Thames Barrier was opened. When its gates are raised, they form a steel wall more than half a kilometer long across the Thames. It prevents flood water from reaching London. More than 90 times, the Thames Barrier has saved the capital from flooding.

    E. Nowadays, Tower Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world. The walkway between the two bridge towers provides a perfect sightseeing platform to enjoy a magnificent view over London. Inside the towers there is an exhibition, which tells the history of the bridge via photos, films, and other media. Tower Bridge also performs its original function of providing a road across the River Thames.

    F. In Britain, swans have privileged status. Since the 1100s, all unmarked swans on any public lakes or rivers in the country have belonged to the Crown. The swans on the River Thames are called Mute Swans. They have a bright orange beak with a black spot on the top. Every July, a special ceremony called “Swan Upping” takes place on the Thames at Windsor. All the swans are caught and their markings are checked and recorded.

    G. Nowadays, the River Thames is the cleanest river in the world that flows through a big city. This is a great achievement because only fifty years ago the river was so dirty and poisoned that it was declared biologically dead. Special plants to clean the water were built in the 1950s. Soon, special laws were issued to stop factories letting their dirty water go into the river. Strict government measures have saved the river.

    Write down the selected numbers in the table under the corresponding letters.

    Sports in Great Britain

    It is interesting how many of today’s sports games originated in Britain – football, rugby, tennis, boxing, rowing and horse racing among them. Of course, horse racing was popular with the Greeks and Arabs long before the British began to put them into practice; and people had been playing football in one form or another for thousands of years all over the world. But it was the British who created special rules for these sports and sports games.

    Football is a good example. In the Middle Ages people in Europe, Japan and Asia all played some forms of the game. A sort of football was also very popular in England, especially as a contest between villages. But at that time there were very few rules. When the students of English schools started to play football, rules then became necessary. They were changed several times and by the middle of the 19th century football had become very much the game that we know and like today. By the way, the first serious football rules were written at Cambridge University.

    A similar story can be told about some other sports. Why did this happen in Britain before other countries? There are some possible explanations: after the Norman invasion of 1066, Britain was quite a peaceful country. As a result people had time to develop sports. Later, after Britain’s industrial revolution, English factories were based on highly organized work and strict time keeping. The same discipline was applied to sport. So uniforms, referees and punishments were introduced to football and other games. British authorities thought that team games were good training for future military and industrial careers.

    Every country has its own list of favorite sports. What is the British list? There are lots of games apart from football. Schoolgirls, for example, play a game which seems a lot like basketball. It is called netball. Netball is different from basketball in many details: for example, the ball is lighter, the court is bigger and netball has seven players in each team (not five). There is something very strange about netball – it is never played by boys. There is no biological reason for this, it is simply a tradition. It is popular throughout the English-speaking world, and the Australians and New Zealanders usually win the competitions.

    But the most famous and popular British sport is cricket. Cricket is an important part of English summer life. You can watch it all day on TV or even listen to it on the radio. News programs keep you up-to-date with the score. Men, when they meet, always exchange a few words about the state of the game.

    One of cricket's distinguishing features is that the games are very long. In an ordinary game at a boys’ school it takes up to a whole afternoon. But the big international games are up to five days long.

    Fipi English oge. Grammar solution

    There is less and less time left before the OGE in English. I have already settled on the Fipi website and am constantly deciding on options from Open Bank Fipi's tasks.

    Today I want to talk about the grammar section in the OGE.

    This section contains 2 tasks, which take 30 minutes to complete.

    9 grammar tasks. The first thing we need to do when completing this task is determine part of speech .

    Noun- just put it in plural. We remember about exceptions. And also about words that end in a consonant + y and f, fe.

    Adjective- only the degree of comparison.

    Numeral— we do ordinal ones and remember how the first, second and third will be.

    Pronoun- here you need to make a sign and repeat possessive, objective, reflexive and absolute possessive. And the main thing is to remember how they differ.

    Verb- the hardest part.

    First we look at who is performing the action. Most often in tasks there is a non-living (rarely alive) object above whichthey perform an action. For example, the cake was decorated... the cake does not decorate itself. When an action on an object is a passive voice (be + 3 verb form). In 9th grade, the passive voice is only in Simple, so we change the form of the verb be.

    I wish- in 9th grade after this construction only Simple past tense (2nd form of the verb, if affirmative)

    Construction with If

    If present simple, will is the first form of the verb

    if past simple, would first form of verb

    And then times go by. You either know them or not, but there are still some small tips. Remember about the coordination of tenses; if you have a past tense in the sentence BEFORE and AFTER the word, then the desired word will most likely be in one and the past tense. If your sentence is in quotation marks, then on the contrary, we don’t look at what happened before.

    The best option is to solve more tasks from the Fipi website and look for someone to check it. Many answers are on the website I will solve Oge. Here I will solve in the comments some options for which I did not find solutions on the Internet and there I will analyze the solution process.

    There will be a separate post about vocabulary tasks.

    Section 2 (Reading OGE 2018)

    Section 2(reading tasks) contains 9 tasks for understanding the texts read. The recommended time to complete the tasks in this section is 30 minutes.

    Methodical hint
    • Read the headings, translate them, try to find what they have in common (topic, problem, situation, keyword, etc.) and how they differ from each other (different aspects of the topic, problem, attitude to the problem, etc.) .
    • Highlight keywords as you read the headlines.
    • Try to predict what the text will be about, its main content, and select words/phrases that are necessary to cover this topic.
    • Carefully read each of the proposed texts, not paying attention to unfamiliar words and expressions, i.e. without going into a detailed understanding.
    • Try to formulate the main idea of the text yourself, then choose the answer that is closest in content from the proposed options and mark it. If it is difficult to immediately determine which title suits the text, you can skip this point and read the next passage, then return to that place.
    • Check whether the choice of one or another correspondence is justified and whether other correspondences are correctly established.
    • Make sure the extra header is selected correctly.
    • If the text seems unclear, put it aside. Match the headings to other texts and use the method of elimination; having 2 texts, the chance of even guessing the correct answer is much higher.
    • Make sure you don't use the same letter twice.
    • Record your final answer in the table after the task.
    • When reading the text, determine for yourself the main idea, separate the main from the secondary, ignore unnecessary information and unfamiliar words that do not interfere with understanding the main content.

    Task 9

    Read the texts and establish a correspondence between the texts and their headings: for each text marked with the letters A–G, select the corresponding heading marked with numbers 1–8. Use each number only once. There is one extra heading in the task.

In the answer field, write down one number that corresponds to the number of the correct answer.

    Carefully, slowly, read the entire text, understand its main content. If some individual words are not clear, try to guess their meaning based on the context.

    Read each question sequentially (Remember that questions are usually asked in the order in which the plot of the text develops) and work through them in the following order:

    • determine the essence of the issue, i.e. what should be the answer: a word, phrase, sentence, paragraph and or the entire text;
    • Try not to look at the answer options and answer the question yourself.

    Find the place (paragraph) in the text to which the question relates, re-read it and find confirmation of your option. Understand how the suggested answer options differ from each other.

    Task 1.You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

    The ninth planet of the solar system was discovered not long ago. It happened in 1930. Scientists had been hunting for the planet for a long time. They had calculated its probable position but there was no proof that the planet really existed. It was too far away for the telescopes of that time to find it. It’s worth mentioning that the first photos of the planet were taken by a very young researcher. He was only twenty-four and had no formal education in astronomy. However he was deeply involved in the search for the ninth planet. The planet at the edge of the solar system was called Pluto, after the Roman god. The name for the planet was suggested by an 11-year-old British girl.

    Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.

    Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.

    Australia once had close ties with Great Britain. Until fifty years ago, almost all Australians were of British or Irish origin. But after World War II more than two million people arrived from Europe. New Australians, as they were known, were from Greece, Germany and Italy. Mass migration has changed Australia into a multicultural society. Today, people of Anglo-Irish origin are a minority. Many recent immigrants are from South East Asia, the Philippines and China.

    Australia’s prosperity has been founded on its natural resources. It produces almost every mineral from gold to uranium. Traditionally, Australia was a farming country and its wealth was based on wool, cattle and wheat. It is still a major exporter of food, making it the breadbasket of Asia. Agriculture and mining, however, employ comparatively few people. Tourism is now Australia’s largest industry, employing 6% of the population. More than three million visitors come to the country each year.

    In spite of the importance of the bush to Australian folklore, 90% of Australians live in cities. Almost everyone lives within a few kilometers of the sea and of the ocean. The beaches are used in the same way as parks: families have picnics, people of all ages jog, play volleyball, swim or just walk. There is great interest in water sports like water skiing, surfing, swimming and sailing. Every city has tennis courts, allowing half a million people to play competitively.

    The Dutch were the first Europeans to see Australia, in the early seventeenth century, but they found no opportunities to settle or trade. English explorer James Cook landed near Sydney 160 years later and claimed it for Britain. But still no one could think what to do with it. The American Revolution provided a solution. America had been used by Australia as a dumping ground for criminals, mostly the poor from cities created during the industrial revolution.

    E.

    Australians used to live on a diet of lamb and potatoes. But with such a variety of climates and with so many ethical groups, the Australian diet has changed dramatically. Cities like Melbourne and Sydney are proud of their huge range of ethnic restaurants and multicultural cuisine, ranging from Italian to Tibetan. The barbecue is a national institution. It is an informal event for people and there is nothing more refreshing than a swim before eating fruit, fresh salads, and steaks.

    Christmas Tree Memories

    My name is Ted. I grew up in the 50s, but my childhood memories are still alive. The most pleasant of them is the family Christmas tree. Besides my mom and dad, there were five children in the family. We all took part in decorating the Christmas tree, one way or another. It was a special time for me as dad took us for a trip to the winter forest.

    The experience was special as only boys were allowed to go to the countryside to pick out the tree. At the age of five I felt proud to be in a man’s adventure. I remember walking through the forest with dad looking for the perfect, large tree. We had a tall ceiling in the living room, so a small tree did not look right there.

    At the age of five, even a small tree seemed great to me. To measure a tree I raised my hands above my head and looked up. If I could reach the top of the tree I thought it was big enough. Dad, however, always chose the perfect tree very carefully.

    Once he had made his choice, he took out an ax to cut down the tree. I wanted to help my dad and brothers, but they always told me to stand back. When the cutting began, I tried to hold the tree up. I was afraid the tree would fall on them and I felt strong enough to hold it.

    After the tree was down we took it to the car and went back home. I don’t remember how we got that large tree through the door, but it was always right. Then dad got the tree to stand up and we could start the decorating. The tree, the boxes with decorations and a tall ladder took up the whole room.

    All the family took part as mum gave everyone a task. I had to pass the decorations. What I liked best about the Christmas tree were the lights. When everyone else had left I stayed in the room and watched the lights traveling up and down the Christmas tree.

    Dad had one more special job that day. Mum took her favorite ornament, a lighted angel, which she had got as a present from her family. Dad climbed up the ladder and fixed the angel at the top of the Christmas tree. When I looked at the angel, I thought Santa was close to my house.

    Everyone, and the decorated shining tree, was ready to celebrate Christmas. It was so big that it nearly touched the ceiling. I felt I was a small part of a big adventure. The last few years we lived in that house the trips to the forest with dad ceased. We bought an artificial tree instead.

    Ted's family had a tradition of decorating the Christmas tree together.
