What is the difference between domain, website and hosting

This is the home for your site, hosting servers host your files. A domain name is the address of your "home". If such an explanation does not satisfy curiosity, we will add some technical details. They are useful to know if you have a website.

To get to your site, a visitor uses a domain name. It seems simple, but it's actually a whole process:

user typed domain name→ pressed Enter → the domain is translated to Server IP→ server sends to this user your website filesbrowser converts them to a regular web page.

Without the three components that we mentioned in the title of this article, a website cannot exist. Let's talk about them separately.

Domain names

Computers communicate with each other through numbers called IP addresses. Much the same way we use a phone number to call a friend. Internet domain names are like contacts in a phone book. Phone books let people know which number to dial to call the right person. In the same way, domains tell people (i.e. their computers) that a site is located on a particular server.

Without a domain, you would have to tell site visitors that the site is located at the temporary link 123.456.789.123/-mysite instead of the domain name mysite.ukr. Agree, it would be extremely inconvenient.

What do you own on the Internet

What is a domain legally? This is your Internet address, the only intellectual property of users and companies on the Internet. Nothing else, except for the domain, belongs to you. The YouTube channel address is owned by Google, the Skype login is owned by Microsoft. Your Facebook account could theoretically stop working. Already now, only a part of your friends sees your publications on the social network, because Facebook decided so.

A domain can be compared to a trademark. After registration of a trademark in a state body, no one can cancel its registration without a court decision. It's the same with the domain.

Hosting servers

Hosting servers are like a room that you rent for your business. Initially, this room is empty, there is no furniture in it, as well as there are no files of your site on the hosting server.

Without hosting servers, you wouldn't have the space to host your website. They can be compared to a PBX, without which you would simply be the owner of a disabled phone number. It is thanks to the telephone exchange that telephone numbers can work.

Site files

Site cookies are what visitors (or even potential customers) see when they land on your site. Site files are no different from those you use in everyday life. For example, these can be .jpg photos or .mp3 music files. Site files can also be in .php or .html format (depending on what code the programmer uses to create them).

Hosting servers are able to "give" these files to the browser, which "reads" information about how the web page should look and displays it to the visitor.

All three components are important for the site. For it to work quickly, the hosting servers must be physically located in the same country as the users (this is also important for positions in Google). The domain name should be memorable and simple so that site visitors can easily find it.
