Connection via vpn. What is VPN

AT modern world cyberspace has become much more popular than the real world. Young people spend more time in online games and social networks rather than walking or reading a book. And this can be understood - the availability of information increases awareness and general development person. However, for some reason, information and social resources can be blocked by providers, government agencies, or the sites themselves. In this case, do not despair, as the blocking can be bypassed in most cases.

What is a VPN connection and what is it for?

VPN (eng. Virtual Private Network - virtual private network) - a generalized name for technologies that allow you to provide one or more network connections (logical network) over another network (for example, the Internet). Despite the fact that communications are carried out over networks with a lower or unknown level of trust (for example, over public networks), the level of trust in the constructed logical network does not depend on the level of trust in the underlying networks due to the use of cryptographic tools (encryption, authentication, public key infrastructure, means to protect against repetition and change of messages transmitted over the logical network).

In simple and understandable terms, VPN is the ability to access Internet resources through other networks. In this case, several levels of channel change are used, which means that your IP address is encrypted, and access is provided according to the scheme: Internet - virtual network (or several virtual networks) - Internet. When using a VPN, providers “see” a connection to a certain network or server, and further requests to resources occur through an encrypted channel. Thus, data packets are returned to you regardless of the blocking of the Internet provider.

When connecting to the Internet through a virtual network, the provider does not monitor traffic

The main disadvantage of a VPN is considered to be a decrease in speed while surfing and downloading files, but technology does not stand still and paid services already provide good connection speed.

How to create and configure a VPN connection on Windows 10

There are several options to set up a VPN for Windows 10. They can be conditionally divided into:

  • wired (standard OS tools);
  • third-party (special programs and browser extensions, as well as the functions of some routers).

Creating a VPN through Windows Settings

Creating a virtual network through Windows Settings is the most time-consuming, but at the same time the most reliable way to gain access to blocked resources. In addition, after creating a VPN, it is quite easy to manage it and, if necessary, change the server address:

  1. Press the key combination Win + I and go to the Network and Internet applet.
    In the "Windows Settings" block, open the "Network and Internet" element
  2. Open the VPN tab and click on the plus sign that says "Add VPN connection".
    Click on the plus sign with the caption "Add VPN connection"
  3. Next, fill out the form:
  4. We save changes through the button of the same name.

Click on the connection and click "Connect"

Open VPN servers can be found on the Internet, for example, or on a similar resource.

How to disable or remove a VPN connection

If you no longer need a VPN or you do not like the services provided, the created connection can be disabled or deleted:

Automatic configuration of a virtual network using special programs

Like most Windows features, creating a VPN connection was taken over by software developers. As a result, users have received a whole market with programs that simplify the creation of a tunnel and connections to virtual networks. Most of them are a small window with just one button - connecting / disconnecting from the VPN.

One such program is HideGuard VPN. Using her example, it is very easy to see how the connection to the virtual network occurs:

Configuration via router

Unfortunately, not all routers can establish VPN connections. To do this, the router must have DD-WRT technology, but devices that are less than four years old almost certainly have the necessary firmware. Router settings vary, but in general, virtual network management is in the same tabs:

VPN in the browser

Instead of establishing a virtual connection for the entire computer, you can resort to partial use of the VPN in the browser. There are two possibilities for this:

  • internal browser settings (for example, Opera has a built-in function with a good and free VPN);
  • extensions in browser stores.

Turbo modes in some situations can also be considered virtual networks, but they only work when your browser has a low access speed to a specific address, in other cases the function is ignored.

To enable VPN in the Opera browser, you need to slightly change the browser settings. To do this, press the key combination Alt + P, select the “Advanced” item in the menu, then “Security” and scroll down the settings page a little. We find the VPN column and switch the toggle switch to the working position.

Turn on the VPN by moving the corresponding toggle switch to the right position

In other browsers, you can install additional extensions that will add the VPN function to the browser:

I prefer to use a browser-based VPN, and there are several reasons for this. Firstly, for most extensions, you can set exceptions in the operation of the virtual network, and this gives huge advantages, for example, apply the service to only one or two sites. For the rest of the Internet, the original connection will be used. Secondly, when downloading files through applications and exchangers, the traffic will not exceed the amount of information received, since packets are often “lost” when dozens of nodes pass through the virtual network. And besides, I always appreciate the connection speed, and a virtual network, even a paid and the fastest one, will slow down data transfer, which is unacceptable in some cases.

Using a VPN on a Windows 10 computer is very easy. Using standard tools, you can create and configure a virtual connection. If necessary, it can be quickly removed or temporarily disabled.

Increasingly, there are situations in which users on the road have to access their home network and network storage. To minimize the risks in unencrypted wireless networks during such actions, it is recommended to organize a "virtual private network" (Virtual private network, VPN). The advantage of such a VPN connection compared to a solution using a dynamic domain name system is that you have a direct connection to your entire home network, the same as if you were sitting at home in your office. In this article, we'll walk you through setting up the VPN function on Synology NAS and configuring devices.

1 VPN connection to Synology NAS

by the most important conditions are the latest version of the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system installed on your Synology NAS and configured remote access. In this case, launch the "VPN Server" component located in the "Utilities" section in the Control Center. Now you can choose from three connection options. Since “PPTP” is considered insecure, and “OpenVPN” is not fully supported by mobile devices, click in the left section (“Settings”) on the item “L2TP / IPSec” and activate the function. Settings that have already been entered, such as the "Dynamic IP address" assigned to VPN-connected devices, do not need to be changed. You just need to enter a strong password in the "Preset password" item and repeat it in the "Confirm preset password" item. Save the changes by clicking the "Accept" button, and click "OK" to confirm the message about forwarding UDP ports 500, 1701 and 4500.

An important point: if you are using a NAS firewall, you should open the above ports. In addition, in the "VPN Server" dialog box, you must select the "Privileges" item and restrict the rights of users who are denied access via VPN. To avoid these actions in the future, select the "General settings" section in the left column and uncheck the box "Give VPN access rights to new users". Users with VPN access rights are listed in the "Protocol" section. Asustor and Qnap network storage systems also support VPN access. The setup is almost the same: launching the application (Asustor - "VPN server", Qnap - "QVPN service"), selecting the type of VPN and entering the necessary information.

2 Setting up port forwarding on the router

In order for the router to forward data packets coming from the Internet to the required devices, it must "know" which network clients these devices are. To do this, you need to configure port forwarding on it. This is done using the router configuration mask. Open a web browser and log into your router via the web interface.

Then click on the menu item "Internet | Permissions" and activate the "Port Forwarding" tab to set up port forwarding. Scroll down to Add Allowed Device and select your NAS. After clicking the "New Permission" button, select the "Port Permission" option, then in the "Application" section, select "Filter Name" and enter a name, for example, "VPN Server". In the "Protocol" section, select "UDP", in the "Port to device", "To port" and "Desired external port (IPv4)" items, enter the number "500" and confirm the entry by clicking "OK". Then set up forwarding of UDP ports 1701 and 4500 in the same way. Save the settings by clicking the "OK" button.

3 Create a VPN connection with Windows 10

After carrying out the preparatory steps, you can check whether everything worked out. Ideally, the first VPN access should be from the local computer, because in the event of a problem, you have access to both the router and the NAS, and therefore will be able to make changes quickly. When working with Windows 10, the setup is quite simple. Select "Network and Internet" in the "Settings" section, select "VPN" in the left column, click on the "Add a VPN connection" link and enter the required data. In the "VPN Service Provider" menu, select "Windows (built-in)", you can specify any name for the connection, for example, "VPN-NAS". In "Server Name or Address", enter the dynamic DNS address of your Synology NAS, in "VPN Type", select "Automatic". Confirm the entry with the "Save" button, then click on the VPN icon and select "Connect".

In the Registration dialog box, enter the information you use to connect to the NAS and click OK. After a few seconds (at which time Windows 10 and the NAS are communicating about the VPN type), a connection will be established and you will be able to access all the resources available on your home network, including the Synology NAS configuration mask.

4 VPN setup on mobile devices

Access to network storage via VPN is also possible from mobile devices. However, setting them up is a bit more complicated than in Windows 10.

Android: open "Settings", in the "Network connections" item, click "Advanced settings" and add a new connection by clicking on the "+". After that, in the "Type" section, select the "L2TP / IPSec PSK" item, enter the "Server Address" (the dynamic DNS address of your storage), as well as the "IPsec Pre-shared Key" (that is, the password set in step 1), then click "Save". Finally, tap the new connection, enter your username and password, activate the "Save account information" option and click "Connect".

iOS: Go to "Settings | Main | VPN | Add VPN" and in the "Type" section, select "L2TP". After that, enter the data in the "Description", in the "Server" item specify the dynamic DNS address of your network storage, and finally, in the "Secret password" item - the password set in step 1. Enter the access data in the "Login" and "Password" items. Then click "Finish", return to the previous dialog box and set the switch in the "VPN Configuration" section to "On" to establish a connection.

Content

Virtual Private Network is a virtual private network that is used to provide secure connectivity within corporate connections and Internet access. The main advantage of VPN is high security due to encryption of internal traffic, which is important when transferring data.

What is a VPN connection

Many people, when faced with this abbreviation, ask: VPN - what is it and why is it needed? This technology opens up the possibility of creating a network connection on top of another. VPN works in several modes:

  • node-network;
  • network-network;
  • node-node.

The organization of a private virtual network at the network levels allows the use of TCP and UDP protocols. All data that passes through computers is encrypted. This is additional protection for your connection. There are many examples that explain what a VPN connection is and why you should use it. This issue will be discussed in detail below.

Why you need a VPN

Each provider is able to provide, at the request of the relevant authorities, logs of user activities. Your Internet company records all the activities that you performed on the network. This helps to relieve the provider of any responsibility for the actions that the client carried out. There are many situations in which you need to protect your data and gain freedom, for example:

  1. The VPN service is used to send confidential company data between branches. This helps protect sensitive information from being intercepted.
  2. If you need to bypass the binding of the service by geographic area. For example, the Yandex Music service is available only to residents of Russia and residents of the former CIS countries. If you are a Russian-speaking resident of the United States, then you will not be able to listen to the recordings. A VPN service will help you bypass this ban by replacing the network address with a Russian one.
  3. Hide site visits from the provider. Not every person is ready to share their activities on the Internet, so they will protect their visits with the help of VPN.

How a VPN Works

When you use another VPN channel, your IP will belong to the country where this secure network is located. When connected, a tunnel will be created between the VPN server and your computer. After that, in the logs (records) of the provider there will be a set of incomprehensible characters. Data analysis special program will not give results. If you do not use this technology, then the HTTP protocol will immediately indicate which site you are connecting to.

VPN structure

This connection consists of two parts. The first is called the "internal" network, you can create several of these. The second is the “external” one, through which the encapsulated connection occurs, as a rule, the Internet is used. It is also possible to connect a single computer to the network. The user is connected to a specific VPN through an access server connected simultaneously to the external and internal networks.

When a VPN program connects a remote user, the server requires two important processes: identification first, then authentication. This is necessary to obtain rights to use this connection. If you have successfully passed these two stages, your network is empowered, which opens up the possibility of work. In essence, this is the authorization process.

VPN classification

There are several types of virtual private networks. There are options for the degree of security, the method of implementation, the level of work according to the ISO / OSI model, the protocol involved. You can use paid access or a free VPN service from Google. Based on the degree of security, channels can be "secure" or "trusted". The latter are needed if the connection itself has the desired level of protection. To organize the first option, the following technologies should be used:

  • PPTP
  • OpenVPN;
  • IPSec.

How to create a VPN server

For all computer users, there is a way to connect a VPN yourself. Below is an option for operating system Windows. This manual does not provide for the use of additional software. The setting is carried out as follows:

  1. To make a new connection, you need to open the network access viewing panel. Start typing in the search for the words "Network Connections".
  2. Press the "Alt" button, click on the "File" section in the menu and select "New incoming connection".
  3. Then set the user who will be granted a connection to this computer via VPN (if you have only one account on the PC, then you must create a password for it). Install the bird and click "Next".
  4. Next, you will be prompted to select the type of connection, you can leave a checkmark in front of "Internet".
  5. The next step is to enable network protocols that will work on this VPN. Check all boxes except the second one. You can optionally set specific IP, DNS gateways, and ports in IPv4, but it's easier to leave automatic assignment.
  6. When you click on the "Allow access" button, the operating system will create the server on its own, display a window with the computer name. You will need it to connect.
  7. This completes the creation of a home VPN server.

How to set up a VPN on Android

The method described above was how to create a VPN connection on a personal computer. However, many have long been performing all actions using the phone. If you don’t know what a VPN is on Android, then all the above facts about this type of connection are also true for a smartphone. The configuration of modern devices provides comfortable use of the Internet at high speed. In some cases (for launching games, opening websites) they use proxy substitution or anonymizers, but VPN is better for a stable and fast connection.

If you already understand what a VPN is on a phone, then you can go directly to creating a tunnel. You can do this on any Android device. The connection is made as follows:

  1. Go to the settings section, click on the "Network" section.
  2. Find an item called "Advanced Settings" and go to the "VPN" section. Next, you will need a pin code or password that unlocks the ability to create a network.
  3. Next step– adding a VPN connection. Specify the name in the "Server" field, the name in the "username" field, set the connection type. Tap on the "Save" button.
  4. After that, a new connection will appear in the list, which you can use to change your standard connection.
  5. An icon will appear on the screen indicating that a connection is available. If you tap on it, you will be provided with statistics of received / transmitted data. You can also disable the VPN connection here.

Virtual Private Network, aka VPN, aka virtual private network. In fact, in a sense, such networks should be considered as a step backwards, however, a forced and extremely effective step. VPNs allow you to return from global networks to local networks, albeit on a rather unusual scale.

VPN, on the other hand, allows you to connect computers scattered around the world into virtual local networks, while you can interact with other network members as if everyone is connected to the same router - play on the local network, open shared folders through Network Places, and also print on "shared" printers. So, we suggest you learn how to create VPN networks, connect to them, and also solve some problems that may arise (although not necessarily) while using them. Despite the fact that general principle always remains the same, we will talk about how to set up a VPN on Windows 7.

Server creation

Let's start creating a VPN server - a computer to which other users of our virtual network will connect. First of all, we need to get into the Network and Sharing Center. To do this, the following steps are performed: start button; "Control Panel"; "Network and Sharing Center".

If you see the inscription "Category" in the upper right corner, you need to click on it and switch the mode to "Large Icons" - this display mode is used in our instructions.

As a result, you should see something like this:

The window displayed on your screen allows you to control almost every aspect of your computer's networking. Here you need to click on the "Change adapter settings" icon.

To start creating an incoming connection, follow these steps:

You now have a window like this on your screen, with a few minor exceptions.

Firstly, there may be other items in the list of accounts, and also, you are unlikely to have the “vpnuser” user, which we will now create by clicking on the “Add User” button.

Fill in the indicated fields:"User" - the client's login is indicated here; "Password" and "Confirmation" - the password of the created account (the values must match); field " Full name» optional - you can leave it empty, as it does not affect the functionality.

After filling in the fields, click on the "OK" button. If you want to add a few more VPN users (this can be useful for further control over them), repeat the procedure as many times as necessary. When the creation is finished, click "Next". In the next window, check the box "Via the Internet", otherwise the "Next" button will be unavailable. Accordingly, after the checkbox, click on the button and get the following window:

It remains to configure the protocols. Regarding their choice - it is better to leave everything as it is. However, if you plan to use applications that need IPv6 support, you can check the box next to this protocol, however, in 99% of cases this is not necessary.

It is extremely important to properly configure IPv4:

Everything is necessary in order to be able to find connected users in the future. In addition, this way you can limit the maximum number of connected, which can be very useful. When you're done, click OK and then the Allow Access button. The VPN server has been created. It remains only to click on the "Close" button and start setting up clients. Also take a look at the Port Forwarding chapter - it might be helpful.

Connecting on a computer

Let's start configuring client computers. First of all, you need to find out the server address, if you are connecting to a “homemade” VPN server, for this you need to go from it (from the server), for example, to the site myip.ru, which will clearly and clearly give out your IP address. In the future, we recommend using services in the spirit of DynDns - so as not to waste time searching for an address.

So, to establish a VPN connection, we perform the following steps:

This click will launch a short connection wizard, in the first step of which you need to select the "Connect to a workplace" item and click "Next".

Now select the first item from the list. You may not even think about the second one in the 21st century - it is needed for DialUp modems.

If you did everything right, it's time to enter the server address. This can be either an IP address that we looked up on the server, or a domain name that can be obtained through dynamic DNS services.

In our case, the address is specified as 157.57.121.54, however, in your case, the numbers will probably be different. You can fill in the "Destination name" field at your own discretion - it will not affect the operation of the network. Also, it is worth checking the box “Do not connect now”, so as not to waste time in the setup process.

Once the required data is specified, click "Next" and proceed to fill in the fields:

  1. "Username" - here you enter the login specified when creating the VPN server;
  2. "Password" - similarly - the password of the VPN user specified in advance is indicated;
  3. Optionally, you can check the "Remember password" box.

It remains to click on the "Create" button and your VPN connection is ready. If the server is running, and you are sure of the correctness of your actions, you can connect now using the "Connect now" button. In addition, you can always establish a connection using the network icon in the lower right corner.

That's all. If everything is done correctly, then you can start using your virtual network, however, we recommend that you read this article to the end - even if everything is working fine now, there is a risk that problems will appear sooner or later and it is better to be prepared for them.

VPN Server in Windows 7

First of all, it should be noted that the built-in VPN server in the "seven" has one important and extremely unpleasant limitation - only one person can connect to your server at a time. If you want more - install Windows Server, however, you can find a rather effective patch on the network that removes this annoying limitation - after applying it, several connections will become available. In addition, sometimes for a full-fledged configuration, it is necessary to configure the firewall and forward ports - we will tell you about this now.

Video: Making a Connection

Configuring Firewalls

In some cases, the connection is established, but there is no connection between computers. It's all about the built-in firewall (or firewall) Windows.

To make it friendlier, you need to indicate that you trust the connected users.

We establish a connection, go to the "Network Control Center" and look for the connection icon. It is called "RAS" on the client and "VPN connection" on the server.

We click on them on both machines and select "Home network".

That's all, on this your problems should disappear.

Port forwarding

Another snag is that home routers and ADSL modems do not by default open the ports required for VPN. In this case, you will have to do it manually.

You will have to open ports on the server, or rather, on the router to which it is connected - how this is done is described in detail in the instructions for your device, but we will only report that the Windows VPN server uses TCP port 1723. Also, if available such a feature, disable the GRE lock.

Setting parameters

Even when the VPN server is already configured, you can change its settings. To do this, open the "Change adapter settings" window that we used in the first part of the article, then right-click on the "Incoming Connections" icon and select "Properties".

A window will appear on your screen where you can edit, delete, and add users, as well as configure protocol settings and IP address ranges. In other words, change the parameters that were specified when creating the connection.

Attention! This feature only works fully if the connection is idle - if someone is connected to you, disable it before changing the settings.

Error 807

Network connection interrupted error number 807 is a real scourge for novice admins. To get rid of it (or at least find out the cause of its occurrence), you need to take a few steps:

As an additional measure, try setting everything up again.

Enable debug logs

Sometimes to get additional information it is necessary to record all server events in a readable file. To start this process, press Win + R and in the window that opens, enter: netsh ras set tracing * enabled.

Press Enter and go to the Windowstracing directory, there you will find several files (5 pieces) that contain detailed information about connection attempts and transmitted data. They open with any text editor. Disabling an entry is done by a similar command, however, the word enabled must be replaced with disabled. VPN is a great solution for a number of cases. However, it has gained the greatest popularity in the corporate environment. Let's say you're on a business trip with your laptop, but you want to use it like you're in the office. In that case, a VPN is exactly what you need.

In addition, such a solution is often used for remote access to printers - despite the fact that there are a lot of modern protocols, such a solution is still simple and convenient.

And, of course, we must not forget about games - a VPN network greatly simplifies the launch of gaming programs designed to work on a local network. Naturally, all this is far from full list possible uses of a VPN. The functions of this service can be useful to everyone, so keep this manual at the ready.

Despite the fact that the general principle always remains the same, we will talk about how to set up a VPN on Windows 7.

Server creation

Let's start creating a VPN server - a computer to which other users of our virtual network will connect. First of all, we need to get into the Network and Sharing Center. To do this, the following steps are performed: start button; "Control Panel"; "Network and Sharing Center".

First of all, you need to check that the Internet connection settings have the correct values. Now you can click the Start button located in the lower left corner of the monitor. Select the "Control Panel" item. Now we need to find the Network Connections icon. A window should open. It is in it that the virtual network will be configured with the creation of a new connection. We need the “Create a new connection” item, click “Connect to a network at the workplace”, select the “Virtual Private Network Connections” item, click the “Next” button.

A new field appears in which you need to enter a company name or username. Now find "Computer name or IP address", specify the VPN server of the provider you are using.

Note: The steps below are optional when setting up a virtual network. They are performed in specific situations:

  • if you are connecting to the Internet with a dial-up connection, you need to select the option "Dial a number for the next pre-connection". After that, you need to select the desired remote access connection option;
  • if you are using a cable modem or other permanent Internet connection, you should select the Do Not Dial to Pre-Connect option.

If you want to create personal access, you should select "only for me". In this case, the virtual network will work after logging in with your account. If you want the connection to be available to all users, you must select the "For all users" option. Click next.

If you want to add a connection shortcut to your desktop, check the "Add a connection shortcut to your desktop" box. Click Done. Next, the program will prompt you to connect. For now, you should refuse by clicking the "No" button.

Open the Network Connections window and right-click the new connection. Now you need to select the "Properties" item and specify the possible connection parameters:

  1. if you need to log in to a domain, open the "Settings" tab, select the "Include Windows logon domain" check box. Before each connection in this case, you need to enter credentials;
  2. if the computer will need to call back when the connection is broken, on the "Options" tab, you will need to check the "Call back on disconnection" checkbox.

Now you can proceed to setting up a vpn connection. This can be done in two ways. If you have created a desktop shortcut, click on it. If not, click the "Start" button, then "Connection", find the icon for the new connection and also click on it.

Connect to the Internet if you haven't already. The virtual network server will ask for a name and password. Write, then click the "Connect" button. The VPN network is working. To disable it, just right-click the connection icon and select "Disconnect".

Possible VPN connection issues and troubleshooting

When setting up a virtual network, various errors may appear. They look like a combination of three numbers - 6xx, 7xx, 8xx. To make it easier to find the right solution, next we will consider several possible problems:

  • 678 - the remote computer is not responding;
  • 623 - the system does not see the phone book entry for the VPN connection;
  • 720 - connection to a remote computer is not established;
  • 800 - Unable to establish a VPN connection;
  • 930 - The authentication server does not respond to a request within a certain time period.

Typically, you can't troubleshoot virtual network connectivity issues on your own. In this case, you have to contact the provider, the administrator of the VPN server, the manufacturer of the equipment used. They will provide the necessary firewall configuration data (it may not allow you to connect to the virtual network due to the security system), using your model router. The 8xx code just indicates that the error occurred in the virtual network. If the problem is due to the browser, you will have to install another one. Often the cause of the error is incorrect user actions, for example, the username or password was entered incorrectly, there are not enough funds in the account, and others.

Many don't know how to set up vpn connection, however, this is not tricky, but requires certain skills. First, let's figure out why such a connection is needed. VPN literally translates as virtual private network. From the name it is clear that it serves to create a tunnel between two computers, through which information is transmitted in encrypted form. Thus, the confidentiality and anonymity of all transmitted information is ensured. Now let's look at the basic steps for VPN settings.
1. Make sure your home computer is properly connected to the World Wide Web.
2. After making sure that the connection is working, go to the Start menu.
3. Select the folder "Control Panel".
4. Find the "Network Connections" folder.
5. Select the link to create a new network connection.
6. In the first window, click on the inscription "Next".
7. Select "Connect to a network at the workplace" and again click on the item "Connecting to a virtual network", again the button "Next"
8. In the next window, you need to select an option depending on the type of your connection:
do not dial the number for preliminary connection;
dial a pre-connection number.
9. Enter a name for the new connection.
10. Then you need to enter ip or its name in a special field.
